Save Sonitpur’s Elephants — Before It’s Too Late

A plea for help to protect the gentle giants of Assam

In the forests and river valleys of Sonitpur, the Asian elephant—our country’s most loved gentle giant—is fighting a silent, heartbreaking battle for survival.

Every year, these magnificent animals journey through the forests of Nameri, Sonai Rupai, Rowta, Charduar, Balipara, Behali, and the riverine corridors of the Jia-Bharali and Kameng. For centuries, these routes kept elephants and humans in harmony.

But today, that harmony is breaking.

The reality is painful:

  • Forests are shrinking.
  • Tea gardens and farms cover old elephant paths.
  • Villages lie right in the middle of ancient migration corridors.
  • Families lose their crops…
  • Elephants lose their lives…
  • And human-elephant conflict has become a daily struggle.

In the last 23 years alone, 266 people have lost their lives in Sonitpur due to conflict.

And elephants—peaceful, intelligent, emotional beings—have suffered injury, starvation, and heartbreaking deaths.

If nothing changes now, both lives and entire elephant populations are at risk.

One organization is standing firm — Nature’s Observer (CB)

In the midst of all this, Nature’s Observer (CB) has been a guardian for Sonitpur’s elephants.

For years, the NGO has:

  • Rushed to villages during elephant emergencies
  • Guided communities to stay safe
  • Worked with forest staff to reduce conflict
  • Conducted awareness programs in remote villages
  • Helped protect corridors and restore forest patches
  • Supported rescuing and monitoring the herds that roam near people

The team walks miles through forests, crosses swollen rivers, and endures sleepless nights—all to protect an animal that cannot speak for itself.

But today… these life-saving efforts are under threat because funds for:

  • Field visits
  • Awareness programs
  • School outreach
  • Early-warning systems
  • Restoring habitats
  • Helping conflict-affected families

…are running out.

Without support, Nature’s Observer (CB) will be forced to scale back critical work—and the elephants of Sonitpur could lose one of their last defenders.

Imagine the consequences…

  • An elephant herd wandering in panic at night… hungry, exhausted, looking for the forest that no longer exists.
  • A mother elephant shielding her calf as firecrackers, crowds, or vehicles come too close.
  • Watching these gentle lives suffer simply because humans took away the land they once walked freely.

This is not their fault. This is not ours.

This is a crisis born from survival—on both sides.

But together, we can choose compassion.

Every rupee brings us one step closer to safety—for the elephants and for the people living beside them.
