Aarey forests in Mumbai is home to almost 5000 tribals and indigenous community spread across 27 padas (village hamlets). Unfortunately these tribals still continue to use open cook fire and highly polluting rudimentary stoves which uses forest fire wood. This hugely impacts the health and well being of women and their families but also continues to put pressure on forests for the firewood. Smokeless Cookstove Foundation has been working with a group of Aarey women to train them in making improved mud cookstoves based on Rocket Stove Technology that reduces firewood dependency and smoke by more than 50%. It also helps these women earn additional income by working on this project.
