India needs your Helping Hand

The Problem:

 The second wave of COVID-19 after a lull, caught India unprepared, with its many mutants affecting even the youth and children, just as the country was opening up its vaccination drive to cover all those aged over 18. Among the front-liners, the police and municipal workers are constantly at risk of contracting COVID. In the state of Maharashtra alone, on an average, two policemen die of COVID every day. With existing hospitals over flowing, patients have to face an agonizing wait before a bed is available and many die before this happens. There is a serious shortage of nurses and doctors to treat the rising number of patients, with India recording more than 350,000 reported cases everyday. This was recently highlighted by Dr. Devi Shetty, one of India's most renowned doctors. ICU beds with oxygen and ventilators required to ensure timely treatment of worsening cases are increasingly difficult to find. There is also a shortage of oxygen cylinders and concentrators, critical for patients requiring oxygen support. 

Our Interventions:

Since March 2020, Helping Hands Charitable Trust (HHCT) has been carrying out relief operations in response to the pandemic and resulting medical crisis by providing medical equipment, protective gear, medicines, supporting treatment, providing training support to nurses and conducting medical camps. We have been providing N95 masks, face shields, gloves, PPE Kits, sanitizers, medical devices such as pulse oximeters, thermometers etc. to frontline health care workers, hospitals, police personnel and urban poor communities. We have also been supplying oxygen concentrators to those facing medical emergencies.

The second wave has proven devastating, requiring doubling up of relief efforts.

§ We propose to add 150 beds out of which 30 will be ICU beds with ventilators and preference will be given to police personnel, municipal workers and other frontline workers.

§ We will make oxygen cylinders and concentrators available to those who have to be treated at home due to paucity of hospital beds.

§ We will aggressively conduct trainings for nurses and doctors in treatment of COVID-19 patients through professional training partners, using the latest medical simulators.

§ We will provide medical consumables like N95 masks, PPE kits, face shields, sanitizers, pulse oximeters, temperature guns, gloves etc. to medical facilities and the community.

§ We will continue with our efforts to provide medical support to the urban poor communities and slum populations that are most marginalized in the face of this crisis.

The Impact:

The additional 150 beds created would contribute to easing the shortage of COVID-19 beds and saving innumerable lives. More than 10,000 nurses and doctors will be trained to treat COVID-19 patients and comorbidity related complications, using professional expertise to cater to the rising number of patients and reduce the mortality rates.
