India needs your Helping Hand
The Problem:
The second wave of COVID-19 after a lull, caught India unprepared, with its many mutants affecting even the youth and children, just as the country was opening up its vaccination drive to cover all those aged over 18. Among the front-liners, the police and municipal workers are constantly at risk of contracting COVID. In the state of Maharashtra alone, on an average, two policemen die of COVID every day. With existing hospitals over flowing, patients have to face an agonizing wait before a bed is available and many die before this happens. There is a serious shortage of nurses and doctors to treat the rising number of patients, with India recording more than 350,000 reported cases everyday. This was recently highlighted by Dr. Devi Shetty, one of India's most renowned doctors. ICU beds with oxygen and ventilators required to ensure timely treatment of worsening cases are increasingly difficult to find. There is also a shortage of oxygen cylinders and concentrators, critical for patients requiring oxygen support.
Our Interventions:
Since March 2020, Helping Hands Charitable Trust (HHCT) has been carrying out relief operations in response to the pandemic and resulting medical crisis by providing medical equipment, protective gear, medicines, supporting treatment, providing training support to nurses and conducting medical camps. We have been providing N95 masks, face shields, gloves, PPE Kits, sanitizers, medical devices such as pulse oximeters, thermometers etc. to frontline health care workers, hospitals, police personnel and urban poor communities. We have also been supplying oxygen concentrators to those facing medical emergencies.
The second wave has proven devastating, requiring doubling up of relief efforts.
§ We propose to add 150 beds out of which 30 will be ICU beds with ventilators and preference will be given to police personnel, municipal workers and other frontline workers.
§ We will make oxygen cylinders and concentrators available to those who have to be treated at home due to paucity of hospital beds.
§ We will aggressively conduct trainings for nurses and doctors in treatment of COVID-19 patients through professional training partners, using the latest medical simulators.
§ We will provide medical consumables like N95 masks, PPE kits, face shields, sanitizers, pulse oximeters, temperature guns, gloves etc. to medical facilities and the community.
§ We will continue with our efforts to provide medical support to the urban poor communities and slum populations that are most marginalized in the face of this crisis.
The Impact:
The additional 150 beds created would contribute to easing the shortage of COVID-19 beds and saving innumerable lives. More than 10,000 nurses and doctors will be trained to treat COVID-19 patients and comorbidity related complications, using professional expertise to cater to the rising number of patients and reduce the mortality rates.
We need your support to sustain and scale up these much-needed interventions and to expand life-saving medical facilities that are the need of the day. Please support whole-heartedly, join us in our efforts.
A majority of the population in Mumbai lives in slums, in poor living conditions. They do not have proper access or means to afford medical treatment, let alone quality care. In the pandemic situation, this access has reduced even further with the overload of cases and a healthcare system struggling to meet the increased needs. Without the required reach and financial strength in an already strained public healthcare system, the poor find themselves without options. Even with serious medical condition, accessing private hospitals is either not an option at all due to the expenses involved or leaves them entirely penniless and debt ridden. In order to deal with this crisis, we have been helping poor families financially to pay their Covid treatment costs and hospital bills.
Recently, we paid the hospital bill for one such family that has undergone untold suffering and loss due to the pandemic and was in a dire situation for payment of the hospital bill. The agony faced by the family is captured in the news report below.

The main issue faced by most patients today is not getting hospital beds with oxygen or ventilators for a long time after they develop symptoms of breathlessness. The only two solutions are having an oxygen cylinder at home or have an oxygen concentrator. Having an oxygen cylinder, though clinically better due to higher rates of flow possible, is practically difficult as each cylinder lasts between 2-8 hours and getting timely refills in an oxygen scarce situation during a lockdown is extremely difficult and stressful. In this situation, having a concentrator is practical. We have invested in a few oxygen concentrators which are loaned to patients free of cost till they improve or are admitted to a hospital.
We have ordered 20 more oxygen concentrators which are expected to be delivered soon. We intend to place a few of them in Pune and Bengaluru apart from Mumbai, depending on the need. We are also getting some oxygen cylinders and have tied up with refillers. We have proposed to put up an oxygen generating plant to the government and are awaiting their decision about a suitable site for the plant.
