Indore’s 100-Day Carbon Challenge: Reducing Emissions, Leading Change (Dec. 1, 2024 - Mar. 10, 2025)

An invisible enemy is often more dangerous than a visible one. Indore, having already demonstrated exemplary leadership in managing visible waste by becoming India's cleanest city, is now poised to take on a new challenge — addressing the invisible pollutants like carbon dioxide that contribute to climate change.

Building on the city's success, the Indore Climate Mission (ICM) aspires to position Indore as a global leader in climate action by focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy conservation, and fostering sustainable daily practices among its citizens. Through widespread awareness campaigns and active community participation, ICM seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, safeguarding the environment for future generations. 

The mission’s key initiatives include educating the public on the connection between fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions, encouraging behavioural shifts to reduce energy and material use. The ICM is going to engage various sectors — such as educational institutions, businesses, government, and households — in these efforts. The mission aims to educate 300,000 to 500,000 citizens on energy literacy and achieve a 7-10% reduction in electricity usage citywide. This transformation is expected to lead to reduced waste, water conservation, and lasting behavioural change. 

Ultimately, ICM aims to build a climate-conscious community and set a benchmark for cities across India and the world in environmental sustainability.
