“I did not want to give up on my disabled son. I went from one school to the other, begging them to admit him, but all I got in return was sympathy. Finally, when I managed to get him admitted to a school, they sent him back within a month, saying that the parents of other students were complaining. But today, I look at him, and I feel proud. Thanks to Disha School, Prerak is excelling at studies. He has even won several national and state level medals in sports,” says Bhimsen Saini, proud father of a disabled child studying at the NGO Disha Foundation school.
However, the nonprofit founded by PN Kavoori (pic above), is struggling to keep the NGO afloat. Help the NGO to keep the doors of the school open and usher in a healthier and brighter tomorrow for underprivileged children with disabilities. Donate now.

Children with disabilities often face severe discrimination and are neglected by regular schools. The condition of disabled children from low-income families is even worse. The nonprofit Disha Foundation has been the only refuge for hundreds of underprivileged children with disabilities since its inception in 1995. By giving disadvantaged and disabled children education, therapy and skills training, the NGO has played a transformational role in the lives of these children.
Why Kavoori decided to start an NGO for disabled kids
Kavoori, all through her career as an educationist saw the need for a school for disabled children and in 1995 founded Disha Foundation.
“As the principal of a big English medium school, I would often be approached by parents of children with disabilities seeking admission for their kids.I saw how gifted most of these children were, yet I felt helpless as I could not give them admission. Moreover, no other institutions could give these children the kind of education and care they needed. I finally decided to quit my job. I reached out to as many people as possible to help me start a special school for children with disabilities and commenced Disha from a rented house,” said the founder of the nonprofit who died recently at the age of 94.
The need for a fundraiser
Kavoori prided her institution for having freed hundreds of children from the confines of their homes and wheelchairs. The NGO through various therapies has enabled children to stand on their own two feet and acquire skills and education they were deprived of.
With her work in the last few decades, Kavoori proved that children with special needs can have a successful and productive life, but their rehabilitation remains costly. Your contributions will enable Disha Foundation to offer underprivileged and disabled kids the best education even after the founder's demise. Your donations for this online fundraising effort will help the nonprofit support students realise their potential and have a brighter future.

Children with disabilities deserve a life of love, laughter, and learning just as much as anybody else. Unfortunately, the ground reality is that these kids are forgotten about and stigmatized in Indian society. The story below would not have been possible without your help.
Aarush (name changed) is a child diagnosed with ADHD and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). During his hyperactive episodes, he posed several challenges to his caretakers such as biting, shouting, kicking, etc. As such, he was deemed uncontrollable and his future was dire.
But when the psychologists and special educators of Disha Foundation reviewed his case and began working with him, no one could have imagined his progress! Aarush improved his behavior, learned to get along with his classmates, and promptly listened to his teacher. He picked up on his education and fortunately lost some of the rigidity in his daily routine.
Listen to Aarush's parents had to say about his journey:
"Since Aarush started attending school, there has been a noticeable improvement in him. He now sits in one place, listens, and responds to our communications, and gets ready for school promptly, which was not the case before. Along with Aarush, we have also found a new direction in our lives. We hope that our child can have a better social life under your guidance. Thanks for your support."
