Story

“My stepmother brutally abused me and left me on the streets when I was a child” recalls Preeti Chetri who was rescued by our NGO partner Ashadeep. By then, Preeti had spent years of hardship as a homeless person. When Ashadeep found Preeti, she was malnourished and was diagnosed with severe mental illness. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.

Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. But the rise in costs of medical care and other essentials have begun to pose a huge challenge for the couple.

Dr Anjana is struggling to keep the doors of Ashadeep open for more people. Your support can ensure that the NGO can continue to care for those who have been cast away by society and have no place to call their own. Donate now.

Shunned by society but embraced by Ashadeep

Dr Anjana and her husband struggled to find a treatment for a family member who had suffered with mental illness for years. During this time, the couple also saw the plight of mentally ill patients coming from low-income families and those that remained on the streets without any care or treatment. Ashadeep was started as a safe home and rehabilitation centre for homeless mentally ill patients.

Mostly those suffering from mental illness lose their way home and end up on the streets. Sometimes, a few are abandoned by their families and forced to live a miserable life on the streets. These people, out of hunger, eat out of garbage dumps and live painful lives. The fate of women is even worse. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. They have been rescuing the homeless from the streets and giving them a safe home for decades now.

A beacon of hope for mentally ill homeless

"Our main objective is to provide the best treatment and psychiatric care to those we rescue so they can live active lives. We enable our residents to live a life of dignity through medication and different therapies. We also try to find the families of those patients who have lost their way home and reunite them with their loved ones. To date, we have been able to reintegrate over 1000 people with their families after completion of treatment,” the NGO founder says.

The nonprofit not only provides treatment to the people they rescue but also gives them skills training and a wide array of employment opportunities so they can live with their heads held high.

But after four decades of selfless service, Dr Anjana today faces a challenge like never before. The steep rise in costs for medical care, food and other essentials has left the NGO struggling for funds. With your support, Ashadeep can remain a safe haven for hundreds of people who are living a pitiable life on the streets for no fault of theirs.

Please donate to this fundraiser by Give, India’s largest and most trusted fundraising platform, and support Ashadeep in their mission to rescue and give life-changing psychiatric and medical care to the mentally ill forced to live on the streets.
