“I lost my husband 15 years back and since then worked as a daily wage labourer and brought up my blind son with great hardships. Despite all the troubles I faced, I kept working even at an old age, I never lost hope until one fateful day when I broke my leg at a construction site. The accident crushed the bones of my leg and broke my spirit too. I had absolutely no one to turn to before being brought to Sapna,” says Laxmi, a resident of an old age home run by our NGO partner Sapna, who is in her late sixties.
For 100+ homeless elderly, Sapna is more than just a home, it is a refuge for them, which has saved them the hardships of living on city streets.
Because of a paucity of funds, Sapna cannot extend its care to more helpless elderly in need of urgent help. With your support, the NGO can be a haven for many more elderly parents separated from their families. Donate now.
All donations to this fundraising campaign are tax exempted under 80G of the Income Tax Act (India), & 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (USA).
While some residents at Sapna were brought here after losing their caregivers, there are many who have found safety after being abandoned by their kin. The NGO not only provides its residents with a comfortable living environment and nutritious food but also ensures that the ailing elderly receive the best medical care.
“Most of our residents suffer serious medical conditions on account of having lived on the streets and the medical expenses incurred are quite significant,” says retired Indian Police Service officer Sudhir Pratap Singh, a founding member of Sapna.“We have an ageing population in India and it is our responsibility to take care of our elderly. If you can stand by us considering the work we are doing we will be able to take care of many more homeless elderly who have nowhere else to go,” adds the former Director General of National Security Guards, India’s elite anti-terror force.
The zeal to serve
Talking about his journey from being a President of India’s award-winning IPS Officer to dedicating his life to the service of homeless and abandoned elderly Singh says, “It was in 2002 that I saw the plight of those suffering without food and shelter near hospitals in Delhi first hand and decided to serve them in whatever capacity I could. For me, my duty as a police officer was also never just a job but was service to the community. And when I started to get involved in social causes, it was just the next chapter in my journey.”
Love and care can change lives of the elderly
According to Singh, many homeless elderly are handed over to them after receiving treatment from hospitals in Delhi. “Most residents who are brought to Sapna’s old age home Anandmayee are recovering from severe ailments, road accidents and mental illnesses. They have no one to care for them and have no family to call their own. But we have observed that with the kind of love and care we provide for our elderly residents, they are able to recover much faster even from serious illnesses.
“I have never sought financial support from anyone, but if people can come forward and help us, we can not just continue to take care of our residents but can open our gates to many more people in need of love and care,” says Singh.

It is difficult to work hard labor and beg on the street but it is all the more deadly the older a person is. Our elderly inmates have suffered great tragedy but have had the strength to go on. Sapna relieves them of their troubles and cares for them for the rest of their natural lives.
From taking care of the abandoned elderlies' nutrition to their medical expenses, counseling, and even funeral expenses, Sapna ensures that our beneficiaries are well looked after.
But we are currently struggling to admit new beneficiaries without compromising the care of those already in our charge. Your support can change that. Contributing goes a long way toward furthering our goal of removing the elderly from the street and into the loving and caring refuge they deserve

Veero's story at Anandam, part of the Sapna NGO network, illustrates the transformative power of dedicated care and medical support. At 52, she was transferred from another center to Anandam, Vijay Mandir, with significant health challenges, including impaired mobility and memory loss. Upon arrival, she struggled with basic movements and had no recollection of her past, including her home and family.
The attentive care provided by Anandam's social workers, along with the medical guidance from healthcare professionals, laid the foundation for her recovery journey. A physiotherapist was brought in to work with Veero, focusing on exercises to improve her mobility. This tailored rehabilitation plan, emphasizing both physical and nutritional care, has led to notable improvements in her condition.
Within just two months, Veero has regained the ability to walk without assistance and manage her daily activities independently, marking a significant milestone in her recovery. Although memory issues persist, preventing her from remembering her family, she has found a new sense of belonging and happiness within the nurturing environment of Anandam.
This progress underscores the impact of Sapna's work, offering not just shelter but also a comprehensive care system that fosters recovery and independence for its residents. However, the ongoing challenge of funding remains a hurdle for extending such care to more individuals in need.
Your support can make a difference in the lives of many more elderly individuals like Veero, providing them with the necessary care and a chance to live with dignity and independence. Donating to Sapna allows us to continue its mission of rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned elderly, ensuring they receive the love and care they deserve in their twilight years.
