Join leprosy survivor Sailendra in giving lifesaving care to others like him

Campaign by Atma Swabhiman

Story

“Their fingers have withered away. Their entire body has no sensation. They get ulcers, and it has spread to their whole body... Some have lost their vision.”

– Sailendra, Founder of Atma Swabhiman

Shunned by society, hundreds of leprosy-affected people live in extreme isolation, struggling daily to survive. Forced to settle near the burning Jharia coal fire—a blaze that has raged for over a century—they endure unimaginable conditions. Atma Swabhiman, led by Sailendra, a leprosy survivor who grew up in one of these colonies, is committed to restoring their dignity through medical care, nourishment, and compassionate support. Sadly, he does not have the resources to support the patients on his own.

Sailendra needs your urgent help. Support him.

A Life of Isolation and Suffering

“When a person gets leprosy, the entire family is banished. Family members were not allowed to take water from the well. They would have to leave their own village and homes.” shares Sailendra.

Leprosy doesn’t just affect the body; it separates families and destroys lives. Generations of leprosy-affected individuals have been cast aside, forced into harsh settlements where they are denied basic human rights and opportunities.

An Urgent Crisis

Sailendra and Atma Swabhiman have helped over 3,000 families by providing essential medical care, dry rations, and other support. Yet, with more than 500 leprosy patients in and around Dhanbad who still need assistance, funds are urgently needed to continue and expand their critical work.

Many of these patients suffer from advanced stages of leprosy, causing severe health issues like loss of sensation, disintegration of limbs, blindness, and chronic ulcers. Without regular medical attention, their conditions worsen, making daily life a constant battle.

Together, We Can Give Them Hope

Atma Swabhiman believes in restoring the dignity of leprosy-affected individuals through holistic support that addresses both their medical and social needs.

“We are trying our best with limited resources. But we cannot do it alone. We need your support to reach more people in need,” says Sailendra.

Atma Swabhiman means self-respect or dignity. Sailendra, who is a leprosy survivor, has been tirelessly fighting to ensure that individuals living with leprosy lead dignified lives. Elderly people with leprosy who are socially marginalized, abandoned, and enduring physical pain in leprosy colonies are cared for and provided with healthcare facilities.

With unwavering dedication and your kind support, we have been able to carry out the following activities during April ‘25 - February ‘26:

  • More than 200 people affected by leprosy received over 4,800 wound and ulcer treatment services.
  • Three washrooms were properly cleaned and repaired, and one hall was whitewashed.
  • Our community kitchen served more than 7500 meals to 42 elderly residents with leprosy.
  • 226 people living with leprosy received delivery of cooked food and healthcare facilities.
  • Workshops on oral and dental awareness were held in four leprosy colonies, benefiting more than 400 people.
  • Sheds for two community kitchens were built.
  • At the BMP leprosy colony in Dhanbad, 5 homes of elderly people were restored and maintained.

Leprosy is more than a disease. Its a social phenomenon wherein once respected members of the community are outcast and have their entire lives upended. For those condemned to a life of exclusion and suffering, Atma Swabhiman is their last hope at respite.

Take a look at some of our achievements in the period April '25 to September '25:

1200+ ulcer / wound care services provided to persons affected by leprosy.

• One shelter hall whitewash, cleaning and three washrooms repaired.

1500+ meals provided in September to mitigate hunger and serve elderly / those with disabilities and marginalized people through a community kitchen

400+ people benefited from oral and dental awareness workshops conducted in 4 leprosy colonies

Lepers face discrimination and humiliation in addition to their physical pain. Only with our support do these innocent souls have a chance at living a normal life.

Their pain is avoidable. Donate now and multiply our impact.
