As we celebrate the 75th year of our Republic, it is imperative to foster a culture of informed and engaged citizenship across India. This is an essential condition for a vibrant and just society.
Our mission this year is to empower citizens nationwide, nurturing them into active participants in shaping our collective future.
To realise this mission, we are dedicated to educating and engaging active citizens in all states of India. We will do this, by building the capacities of Citizen Champions. These are individuals equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive change within their communities. These champions facilitate workshops, spread awareness, disseminate learning materials, offer guidance, and encourage fellow citizens to participate in local governance and civic activities.
This fundraiser is a pivotal component of our broader initiative to enhance constitutional awareness and civic engagement.
By supporting us, you join a movement aimed at fostering a lasting impact on the lives of all citizens.
PLAN FOR THIS YEAR
Our primary objective for this year is to reach citizens through 3,000 Citizen Champions, spread across all states of India. Through our training program, "Constitution for Citizen Action," participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of constitutional rights and legal provisions. Moreover, they will develop practical skills to address individual and community issues while upholding the principles enshrined in our Constitution.
In tandem with the training program, we aim to bring together all the Citizen Champions we have trained, till date, through a community of practice called Jan Collective. Through this platform, Citizen Champions will have the opportunity to engage in on-going learning sessions, collaborate with peers, and take collective action. This community of empowered citizens will serve as a driving force for positive change across the nation.
IMPACT TILL DATE
Since our inception in 2010, we have built capacities of over 6,700 Citizen Champions, by partnering with 155 organisations. These Champions, have further impacted over 25,00,000 citizens, by applying the knowledge they have gained though We, The People Abhiyan; and actively helping citizens resolve various civic issues.
As of January 2024, we have worked in 14 States, namely – Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, & Kerala.
During the course of the last 14 years, we have trained changemakers who are involved in community development and ensuring access to entitlements. Specifically, field teams and community leaders of CSOs and networks working with women collectives, youth, panchayat members, youth groups, networks working on labour rights, gender equality, caste discrimination and other issues.
Strategically, we contribute to 3 Sustainable Development Goals: Reduced Inequalities, Partnership for the Goals, & Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
STORIES FROM THE GROUND
Basanti Devi: Citizen Champion from Koderma, Jharkhand
Basanti, engaged in the Gender C.R.P. programme with our partner Pradan, secured her daughter's enrolment in the Ladli Yojana Scheme after our training. She navigated bureaucracy, escalating to higher authorities for assurance. Joining Naari Adalat, she also fought against gender injustices, aiding a victim of domestic abuse.
Basanti's dedication & courage epitomizes constitutional values, driving societal and state-level impact. She remains an unwavering force for progress, empowering not just herself and her daughter but also the women of her community.
Rukhsar Mullah: Citizen Champion from Mumbai, Maharashtra
Rukhsar, a dedicated field officer at Apnalaya, lives in the suburb of Dharavi, famously known as the biggest slum in the world. She applied constitutional principles, learned during our training, to advocate for community rights. Using the Directive Principles of State Policy, she addressed grievances of her community, and secured water access under the Swachh Bharat Mission. By incorporating constitutional elements in her appeals to authorities, Rukhsar achieved significant state-level impact, prompting the Municipal Corporation to commit to installing water pipelines in Dharavi. Her relentless pursuit of empowered communities exemplifies true citizenship advocacy.
