“There is so much deforestation happening. Our rivers are drying up. Lakes are disappearing. There is so much water shortage. There are fewer trees and fewer flowers. There is a crisis for our butterflies, moths, and bees. Warming has begun. Villages are getting warmer, ponds are turning hot. Even roads and buildings are getting hot. The air is so hot!”, says Swami Prem Parivartan, popularly known as Peepal Baba, talking about the enormity of the problem India is facing.

A challenge of mammoth proportions

Deforestation and a loss of green cover have led to a massive environmental crisis that has been brewing for decades, if not more. With cities turning into smoke chambers, and severe water shortages sweeping across cities, towns and villages alike, environmental crises have begun to affect each one’s life in some form or the other. 

Peepal Baba believes that it is our planet and we as people would have to take up responsibility to repair the damage done this far. “We need to see what we can do as individuals. You have to understand the power of one. If you do it then the world will follow. If you do it your friends will do it. If you do it your family will do it. If you do it, even passersby will see you and get influenced and they will also do it”, he says.

“It's been 47 years since I have been planting saplings across the country but our work has never stopped. There are 206 districts where we have planted trees on roads. We have worked in all 22 districts of Haryana, in all districts of Punjab, in Uttarakhand, in Himachal and we have planted a lot in Jammu and Kashmir.
