Join SNM’s Clean Village Campaign to Fight Plastic Waste

The beautiful villages of Konkan are facing a growing threat — plastic waste.

From narrow lanes and farmlands to rivers and coastlines, plastic waste is silently spreading across this once-pristine region. Villagers often burn plastic in their backyards. Cattle unknowingly consume plastic bags mixed with leftover food. Blocked drains and waste piles have become a daily sight — even where children play.

This is not the future Konkan deserves.

🧹 The Clean Village Campaign:

At Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM), a trusted grassroots NGO based in Chiplun, we have spent over 33 years working to protect the environment, wildlife, and communities of the Konkan region.

Through our Plastic Waste Management Mission, we are:

• Conducting all types of plastic clean-up drives in villages
• Teaching villagers how to manage all kinds of plastic waste — and how to stop it from reaching landfills, by adopting practices like reduce, reuse, and segregation
• Spreading awareness in homes, marketplaces, and groups
• Building lasting habits for clean, safe, and healthy surroundings

Our mission is rooted in community participation — local youth, SHGs, and village leaders all come together to create a waste-free future.

🚨 Why This Matters:

Most Konkan villages have no plastic waste collection system.

Many people are unaware of the dangers of plastic pollution, and it continues to pile up — or gets burned, creating harmful smoke.

This leads to:

• Polluted air and water
• Harm to farm animals and local crops
• Serious health risks for villagers

Plastic pollution here is more than a cleanliness issue — it’s an environmental and health crisis.

✅ What We’ve Achieved So Far:

SNM has already made a strong impact in 10+ villages across Chiplun, Guhagar, and Dapoli, by organizing:

• Village-level plastic collection drives
• Village-level awareness programs
• Door-to-door engagement and waste segregation efforts
• Collection systems for waste plastic

One of our key ongoing efforts is plastic and solid waste management.

Over the past four years, we’ve successfully diverted over 220 tons of plastic waste from landfills in and around Chiplun.

Our success comes from working with the people — empowering communities to lead the change themselves.
