Uninhibited is a non-profit based in India working in some of the most rural and tribal regions, with a focus on strengthening school and healthcare systems for adolescent girls through evidence-based menstrual health Interventions. Our mission is to recognise menstrual health as a vital health indicator. We aim to reach 1.6 million adolescent girls in the next 3 years, empowering them to track their menstrual cycles and take charge of their health. Additionally, we are committed to strengthening healthcare systems to provide better support for menstrual health.

The Challenge in India

In India, 1 in 10 adolescent girls faces significant health challenges. This means that 2 in 5 girls have anaemia, and 1 in 8 are affected by PCOS. Each year, 1 in 11 girls aged 15-19 experience unintended pregnancies. Shockingly, only 1 in 5 women between 15 and 34 is aware of her ovulatory cycle, and globally, 9 in 10 menstrual irregularities remain undiagnosed. Moreover, 7 in 10 adolescent girls do not seek support for menstrual health-related issues, and 6 in 10 have unsatisfactory menstrual hygiene practices.

These statistics highlight the urgent need to address menstrual health. Menstrual issues serve as crucial indicators for underlying health issues such as anaemia, PCOS, and unintended pregnancies. Moreover, menstrual irregularities and disorders can significantly reduce the quality of life for these girls, affecting their health, social interactions, education, and economic prospects.

Uninhibited's Transformational Approach

At Uninhibited, we are committed to transforming adolescent responsive healthcare systems in India. Our approach involves training government Frontline Workers (FLWs) with accurate content on menstrual health. We equip them to create physical and virtual safe spaces for adolescent girls in rural and tribal public schools, focusing on promoting health-seeking behaviours, menstrual cycle tracking, and seeking timely healthcare support. Additionally, we capacitate existing government telemedicine helplines to address queries based on menstrual disorders in a safe, non-judgmental manner. We also sensitise Primary and Adolescent Health Providers to be responsive to adolescent needs. Furthermore, we engage in data-based advocacy to address WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) infrastructure gaps and recognise menstruation as a vital health indicator.

Our Impact So Far

Since our inception in 2016, we have reached more than 401,440 adolescent and adult menstruators across 22 Districts in 10 States. However, there is still much work to be done.
