Rajpur Gramphanyat, situated in Brajrajnagar tehsil within the industrially developed Jharsuguda District of Odisha, lies adjacent to the IB and Basundhara rivers. Deogaon, a village within Rajpur Panchayat, predominantly comprises 80% Scheduled Castes (SC), 15% Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 5% Other Backward Classes (OBC). However, it grapples with a dismal literacy rate of only 10%, with 90% of children dropping out between the 5th and 10th grades. These children are predominantly first-generation school goers. Substance addiction is prevalent among 95% of parents and youth, exacerbating uncertainty regarding their livelihoods. Traditional livelihood activities such as fishing, bamboo craft making, and earthen pot making have dwindled, forcing residents into casual labor. The village's economic status is dire, with all households falling below the poverty line. Additionally, child marriage remains a prevalent issue in the community.
In light of the Government of India and state governments' efforts towards inclusive growth and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, the disparity in the SDG India Index rank Odisha (19) among 28 states underscores a concerning gap. From our research, experience and analysis, we have identified that this inequality stems from the lack of social harmony and cohesion within communities. With our abundant resources and policies, we're witnessing numerous issues within society like the above issue in Rajpur village. These problems are closely tied to the decision-making processes of individuals within both the system and society at large. These decisions often stem from a deficiency in moral education, values and skills. This multifaceted issue is exacerbated by the insufficient prioritization of value education and in educational institutions and societal systems. With a predominant focus on academic achievements, essential character traits such as empathy, respect, and integrity are neglected, impeding individuals' ability to understand and cooperate effectively with others. This deficit directly hampers the sustainable development goal.
We are establishing a model community based maker space where children and youth feel safe and nurture towards creative curious ,critical thinking responsible citizen of their community.
We are fundraising to bring a lasting change in the lives of the underprivileged directly in Deogaon, Rajpur Jharsuguda Odisha and indirectly to the ecosystem. To help us co-create the model learning space, we need your support and contribution. Please back our fundraiser so that together we can build a better India for all of us.
