Kanta Bai is 70 years old and works as a maid in households in the city of Mumbai.

She lost her elder son and daughter-in-law years ago. She has been physically abused by her younger son multiple times and has been a victim of serious domestic violence. Later, she was abandoned and left alone to take care of herself and her young grandson. She got in touch with the HelpAge team to become a part of Support-A-Gran program. She has been a part of the program for many years now.

There are thousands of destitute elders, like Kanta Bai, who do not have access to two square meals a day and the means to meet their basic needs. Our partner nonprofit addresses this issue through their programs. The elders are provided not only monthly ration, but also sustenance and dignity. It makes them self-reliant, as they don’t have to beg or depend on anyone anymore.

The ration kit consists of wheat, rice, pulses, cooking oil and basic spices along with daily use items such as detergent, soap, clothing and an allowance to elders in need. Monetary support is often given to extremely needy elders living in old age homes.

The program has gained much recognition among the elders. The project is implemented through local project partners, who help identify destitute elders in neighboring communities and our partner supports them by providing a life of sustenance & dignity.
