Muktangan is an innovative educational project which has demonstrated how ordinary women and men empowered with the right beliefs and skills, can drive extraordinary outcomes for children from their own aspiring communities. We adopt a “Total Schools Approach” by training local community members through a year-long pre-service teacher education program to provide holistic and inclusive education.Since its inception in 2003, Muktangan has evolved into a Hub and Spokes model of a Teacher Education Center (hub) and 7 English medium Municipal schools Pre-School to Grade 10 (spokes) with its unique design, all located in Mumbai’s G-South ward where we offer child-friendly education to over 3,700 children from under-served communities. To date we have provided livelihoods and vocational development to 800+ community members (mostly women) who have been trained in our pre-service teacher education center, 600 of whom are employed as teachers and teacher educators in our schools. Since all our students and teachers come from the same socioeconomic background, they share a deep bonding with each other. Collectively, the community model is recognized as the “Muktangan Educational and Resource Centre” (MERC). Muktangan is now actively engaged in teacher education and schooling and is widely recognized for sharing its learnings to government, academic institutions and researchers. Through outreach initiatives and partnerships with local and state government, NGOs, academic institutions both local and international, we have reached out to 72,000+ children and 5,000+ teachers and teacher educators across India. For more information log on to www.muktanganedu.org Our Goal is to enable access of quality education to every child in our country (through our partnerships with Government and non-governmental organizations, working at the grassroots level). The Uniqueness of our Program (The ‘Total Systems’ Approach)The strength, sustainability and efficacy of our program lie in its two distinctive features:1. An integrated teacher education program: Our school leaders, administrators, subject faculty and teachers belong to the same community as our students. With our intensive one-year pre-service teacher education courses (Foundation &amp; Early Childhood Development – TISS Certified) and subsequent ongoing in-service training and development program, they become empowered, progressive thinking and confident teachers who nurture and develop children from their own communities which in turn pivots the teachers to become role models and social change agents within their neighbourhood / social milieu.2. Our pedagogy and classroom processes which promote twenty-first century skills of critical thinking, creativity and collaboration, rather than passive rote learning.Our active constructive teaching-learning methodology ensures that learners are actively involved in the process of meaning and knowledge construction as opposed to being passive information receivers. There is great focus and emphasis on exchange of ideas, interactivity and group work with the teacher playing the role of a facilitator in the process. Rigorous Continuous Tracking: At Muktangan, we have formally broken down every learning outcome to micro granular strands or units of learning. We track the progress of every child on each of these micro-units of formative assessment and provide individualized appropriate and timely remedial interventions, within our school program.
