Campaign by Sri Arunodayam Charitable Trust
Kalaadhaanam
Kalaadhaanam simply translates as “art donation”. A simple concept envisioned by our founder and principal Kavitha Jayaraman.
Our mission is “Seva through Vidya” or “Teach to reach”. We raise funds for various social agencies working specifically towards improving the lives of underprivileged kids, through the medium of education.
When contributing to various social causes in India, Kavitha realized that there is a lack of consistent funding and contributions coming into smaller organizations due to their inability to market themselves. Most of the contributions came from referrals and well wishers but it was not regular and sizable enough to sustain these social initiatives. This formed the backstory for Kalaadhaanam. The students contribute every month directly to various social funding initiatives identified by Kalaadhaanam through a quarterly funding program via various crowd funding portals.
Our long term goal is to have art educators around the globe join the movement and enable an ecosystem through arts education that helps fund small scale NGOs in every country.
Proposed project:
This fundrasier by Kaladhanam is to sponsor the installation of a solar photovoltaic system at Sri Arunodayam kitchen. The implementation of a solar power solution can significantly enhance the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the organization's operations.
Sri Arunodayam prepares delicious meals for the children thrice a day and also offers snacks in the evening in hygienic conditions.
Project Overview:
The proposed project involves the installation of a 6.54 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Sri Arunodayam kitchen. This system will harness the abundant solar energy available on-site to power fans, lights, refrigerators, and heavy-duty equipment in the kitchen. The system will comprise solar panels, inverters, batteries, and necessary electrical infrastructure to ensure seamless integration and reliable operation.
Who are Sri Arunodayam ?
Sri Arunodayam is a home in Chennai for abandoned children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). The home came into existence in 2002 on account of the despicable practice of families who abandon their vulnerable children due to ignorance, poverty, and social stigma. Abandoned children with ID continue to be found in public places such as hospitals, bus and railway stations, and at times even in dustbins! The Departments of Social Defence and Social Welfare (Govt. of Tamil Nadu), Child Welfare Committees, and India's ChildLine Services are the channels through which these children enter our home where they are loved, nurtured, restored to health, and rehabilitated. Today we have 115 precious lives in our care.
What we do
Every month we receive around 10-15 requests for shelter but are unable to take in new entrants as our current homes have reached full capacity. It really pains us to turn children away. To alleviate this unfortunate situation, we have constructed a home, exclusively for 100+ abandoned girl children with Intellectual Disabilities. This home has been designed with its own medical center, physiotherapy and special education rooms, a vocational training center, dormitories, restrooms, a centralized kitchen/pantry and dining room. Sri Arunodayam assumes life-long responsibility for these children, providing them with a safe/permanent shelter, nutritious food, medical care, and rehabilitation therapies so that they can lead purposeful lives and be integrated back into society at their own pace. Our home is widely recognized in South India as a pioneer and high caliber home of its kind, receiving many recognitions and awards over the past 21 years. <For more information, visit: https://sriarunodayam.org/our-story/>
