Kerala Floods | Restoration of Flood Affected Orphanages in Kerala

The Kerala floods have damaged large parts of the state, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable and marginalised. Child-care institutions like orphanages and shelter homes that provide care to abandoned / neglected children are amongst the worst affected, owing to the damage to the physical infrastructure and the high number of children supported by the shelter home (~30-40 children in each). Unlike individual families which have just 2-3 dependents, orphanages have a disproportionately large number of dependents. Additionally, since their neighbourhoods that function as their support systems have sustained damage as well, their regular source of donations will be cut off.

We did an assessment and found that several orphanages across the district were submerged during the floods and sustained huge loss. Since a majority of them had their kitchens, dining and study areas on the ground floor, all furniture and appliances in these rooms have been broken and are now scrap. All kitchen appliances are unusable, beds broken, mattresses drenched and unhygienic to reuse, toilet block walls cracked/crumbling, important documents drenched and washed away.

With high losses and few avenues to raise funds/ support, many orphanages are in a desperate situation.

Restore orphanages/shelter homes back to mint condition through support across areas like cleaning/disinfecting, civil work, replace utensils and appliances, provide calamity relief grant and support in procuring lost ID proofs.

Orphanages and shelter homes affected by the floods have been restored back to their previous condition in a short time, to mitigate any long-term impact of the trauma on our most vulnerable children.
