Story

🚨We urgently need your help to sustain our efforts to support the absolute needy in Mumbai. Just ₹30 per meal can make a difference. Without additional support, our kitchens, which serve those in dire need, will be forced to shut down. 🚨

Khaana Chahiye Foundation’s citizen-led community kitchens have been combating urban hunger in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Every day, we provide 465 cooked meals and distribute 200 grocery kits each month as emergency assistance. Even the smallest donation can make a significant impact and sustain our efforts. Please donate today and help us keep feeding those who need it most.

Why It Matters

No one should ask “Where will my next meal come from”.

Without access to nutritious food, vulnerable populations have lowered immunity levels, which makes them susceptible to sickness. Thus, access to nutritious food is a form of preventive medicine in itself.

We have successfully implemented a combination of technology and on-ground volunteers to crowdsource a comprehensive hunger map of the city of Mumbai that allows us to precisely care for marginalized groups.

Context:

The Khaana Chahiye Foundation began as a citizen-led initiative in March 2020 in response to the food needs of vulnerable populations in Mumbai during the lockdowns. With support from the city, the campaign has served 75 lakh meals and distributed 72,000+ grocery kits. The organization also provided relief to 6 lakh migrants at key road exit points and railways stations in Mumbai. It has since evolved into a volunteer-driven group working to address the issue of urban hunger through community involvement.

The aftermath of the pandemic continues to have a disruptive effect in the local and informal sectors.

While we work on long-term solutions that enable zero hunger we need an immediate response that works. Through our relief efforts in the pandemic over two years and as part of our hunger map initiative, we have identified micro clusters of vulnerable communities across the city. Help us support their food needs through our community kitchens and SOS grocery drives.

Our Projects:

Community Kitchen:

The Khaana Chahiye Foundation started its community kitchen vertical in April 2021 as part of its relief efforts. Over 18 months, the kitchens have cooked and served nearly 8 lakh meals to various communities.

One kitchen, located in Kurla, is run by 10 women from the Qureshi Nagar community and serves meals to communities in Sahyadri Nagar, Panjrapole, Banjar Tanda, and Wadar Wasti, as well as to students, the disabled, homeless, unemployed, and daily wage workers. The meals are also sent to Bal Jeevan - a daycare centre for children from rag picker families. The Kitchen shares a total of 700 meals per day.

Our second community kitchen, at Ulhasnagar, is driven by transgender and former victims of human trafficking and commercial sex work. The beneficiaries include daily wage workers, destitute, PLHIV (People living with HIV) migrant workers from the brick and jeans manufacturing industries & transgender. The Kitchen shares 350 meals a day

 SOS Grocery Service:

During the first lockdown, Khaana Chahiye used online forms to track and report hunger in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. In 2021, this mechanism was upgraded to a multilingual (English, Marathi, Hindi) Report Hunger WhatsApp bot in partnership with WhatsApp and Gupshup with anyone in Mumbai registering or reporting hunger through the bot. Requests are verified by the Khaana Chahiye team and a call is made to the registered phone number to confirm the details.

The organization has also partnered with TISS and CSSC, organizations that work with vulnerable communities in Govandi and Mumbai's western suburbs, to identify those in extreme need and provide them with emergency grocery support.
