Story

At LIFI, we are tackling one of the biggest problems facing India today - 150 million children - that's one in three - are being denied access to basic rights because they have been pushed out of the education system. This is due to a myriad of barriers, including poverty, child labour, disabilities, civil strife, lack of infrastructure, reverse migration, harmful gender norms, and discrimination.

The situation is further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a 7% dip in learning levels for children nationally and threatens their educational continuity. We cannot allow this crisis to go unaddressed.

LeAD UR India (Leadership and Development in Urban and Rural India) Fellowship

With multiple iterations and our experience, we realised that we need a more local approach to solve the complex problem of out of school children. With this thought, we adopted a fellowship model in 2021. The fellowship is called LeAD UR India Fellowship. It aims at empowering the local youth in becoming advocates  for children who are at risk of dropping out of school or have already fallen out of the education system. The fellows (also called as youth teacher leaders) undergo intensive training and mentorship to work in their own communities for the following:

  1. Identify children who have been pushed out of the education system
  2. Bridge their learning gap through contextual pedagogy in the community learning centres
  3. Facilitate the process of putting back children in the formal education system and retain them.

The USP of the Fellowship is to build a collective ecosystem of support for children, wherever they may be in the country. This is being enabled through partnerships with NGOs working towards a similar vision across India. Till now we have partnered with 3 NGOs to implement our fellowship in their own communities and one state government.

Some milestones of our fellowship journey are as follows:

  • More than 80% of our children have gone back to schools and are attending them with regular attendance
  • Our children have shown great progress in the foundational learning outcomes with a 40% increment in their Hindi and Maths scores, adding to their confidence and dignity!
  • Our YTLs are setting examples for the children by being their role models, taking a stand for their own learning and development. Some of them now will be leading their own learning pods within the community to continue to teach and some of them are accepted into other Fellowships.

Request :

In the new year (2023-24), we are looking forward to partnering with 2 state governments and 3 additional NGOs for our fellowship. To keep our momentum going we are looking to raise INR 59,00,000 for the upcoming academic session, and we are counting on your support to make it happen.

Your contribution will go directly towards supporting our work with children. This includes stipends for our Youth Teacher Leaders, remuneration for community mobilizers, classroom materials, travel costs, and residential training for our Youth Teacher Leaders in June.

When you support LIFI, you are investing in a brighter future for India. You are empowering the next generation of leaders and innovators, and ensuring that all children have access to the opportunities they deserve.
