Story

Cancer, unfortunately, still remains a stigma in the Indian society. Around 3,00,000 children worldwide are detected with cancer annually, out of which 80,000 are detected in India. Most of them fail to survive due to lack of awareness, funds, knowledge, and support. Many travel to different urban cities to receive cancer treatment and are forced to stay for long periods. Most come from economically disadvantaged families, and treatment costs limit their chances of having a proper accommodation and often the children and their families have to stay on the streets, exposing them to face discrimination, negligence, misery & unhygienic environment.

CanKids is advocating for childhood cancer to be a child health priority in India. Every child living with cancer deserves the best possible medical and psychosocial care, regardless of the country of origin, race, financial status or social class.

It is also anchored on the premise that childhood cancer deaths are avoidable with timely and accurate diagnosis, availability and access to proper treatment and care as well as affordable, good quality essential medicines.

The International Childhood Cancer Day falls on 15th of February every year.

February 15th is celebrated worldwide as International Childhood Cancer Day – aimed at creating awareness and advocating for childhood cancer as much for honoring the bravery and courage of children fighting cancer in our state, country and worldwide through special events/outings for children with cancer and their families.

Our theme for ICCD is Go Gold India – MeraHaq, MeraBachpan, MeraJeevan– I Deserve My Childhood My Life. Families will participate in:

1. Awareness: “I deserve to be a part of competitions and we will have kite making activities at the Learning activity Clinics in OPD and Wards, where children will make kites and together with their families, write their prayers and messages on them.

2. Outing & Celebration: Children will be taken for an outing to a park where they can fly kites. The messages on the kite will reflect our theme and advocate to the governments that “Childhood Cancer should be a Child Health Priority in India”.

3. Fundraising: Raising funds from crowdfunding, employee engagement through kite donation at corporates for Children with Cancer, event hosting wherein the employees will be contributing a kite for the children.

1. Awareness:

a) Spreading awareness in public through public awareness forums, awareness Rallies, blood donation camps and various other events.

b) Reach out to more people with online, social, print and digital media.

2. Outing and Educating: Taking approximately 1300 children and their families for outing and kite flying activity PAN India.

3. Advocacy: Advocating to the state government and raising awareness for ICCD.

4. Fundraising: Raising funds by celebrating International Childhood Cancer Day for holistic care of the children with cancer in India.
