Story
  • Tiruvannamalai district is one of the largest districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The holy town of Tiruvannmalai is located at 185 km southwest of Chennai and 200 km east of Bangalore which is prone to drought area.
  • As per the District disabled welfare office approximately 54,000 disability population in Tiruvannamalai district, of which 40% is children below 18 years. Among the various disability, Children with Intellectually disabled (MR) / Cerebral palsy / Autism / Multiple Disability are most vulnerable. In Tiruvannamalai, Around 3,800 children with Mentally disabled Intellectually disabled ( MR) / Cerebral palsy Autism / Multiple Disability with the age group of 0 to 14 yrs. The Rehabilitation structure is inadequate to support these children.
  • Thandarampet, Tiruvannamalai, Cheyyar, Jawadhu hills and Chengam block are the highly disabled populated regions of Tiruvannamalai dist. In Thandarampet block, there are 1,912 persons are affected with Cerebral Palsy/Mental Retardation, 1413 children under the age group from 6 months to 18 years is affected with Cerebral Palsy and Spastic. 949 children found to be Mental Retardation in Thandarampet block.
  • As the nation is under the threat of the COVID 19 pandemic, Children are the worst affected especially Children with Mentally retarded and Cerebral palsy children.
  • Block Name: In Tiruvannamalai - 250 MR/CP children, Thandrampet - 260 MR/CP Children, Chengam - 210 MR/CP Children
  • Lifeline special school for Mentally retarded ( MR) & Cerebral Palsy (CP) implements 3 projects in Thandrampattu village/block, Tiruvannamalai dist from June 1998. 1. Special school for MR & CP for 6 to 18 yrs, 2. Early Intervention Centre for children with MR / CP for 6 months to 6 years. 3. Community Outreach program for MR / CP children in 116 villages ( Thandrampattu and Tiruvannamalai Block)
  • During this lockdown period, we initiated innovative teaching methodology in order to continue our special education services and therapeutic intervention to reach the unreachable children with Cerebral Palsy & Mental Retardation. Our special educators worked on microteaching modules – breaking a skill into a smaller module, a more manageable component in a video and upload it to our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB-dX8cn66Pcv5A9BPqvB4A). It is a module-based lesson that is especially to meet the special needs of children with disabilities and a guide for parents.
  • Also during the Lockdown period, our Special educators reached the children in their house and provided training to the child and their parents. Through this way, we are providing an appropriate educational / Therapeutic program to our Lifeline special school children as well as with the help of the District disabled rehabilitation office, we have circulated Our YouTube linkage to the maximum number of parents which shall enable them to support their special need children. 
  • Lifeline Special School for the Children with MR & CP Through its activities ensures the Right rehabilitation / educational rights and equalization to Mentally retarded and Cerebral palsy children in the rural villages in 2 blocks of Tiruvannamalai. The project focuses on multiple functionaries in building children capacity and improves their daily living activities for effective development and rehabilitation.
  • During this lockdown period, a Team of 6 special educators reach the MR / CP disability children in their families and train the parents to teach/handle their special need children. Apart from reaching out to 720 MR and CP children who are getting benefiting from this project. Through this innovative program and in close collaboration with District disabled welfare office, we have reached out to all the special schools in Tiruvannamalai district (i.e) Childline special school, Tiruvannamalai, Mobility Early intervention centre, Chengam block and shared our expertise and training material to them as well as we have reached out to around 600 parents, through our YouTube channel and get connected to our Special educator team constantly for their children developments.
  • This program has not only provided rehabilitation imitative / education to MR / CP children, but it has also created a protective environment for these children in the 2 blocks during this lockdown.
