Story

When you step into a low-income school, you might expect silence, worry, or hesitation on the young faces.

But when you enter an Apni Shala supported school, what you actually hear is... laughter.

What you see there is... joy.

And before you can even settle in, a dozen children run up to hug you!!!

Bhaiyaaa….Didiiiiii…..!!!

This warmth is not accidental. This requires building a school ecosystem that centers children’s emotional curiosity and voice. That includes teachers, parents, principals, other staff and officials, the physical environment, school’s policies and practices.

And you can help us build such ecosystems!

We are a Mumbai-based social impact organization working since 2013 to build social and emotional competencies for a harmonious and equitable world.

Since 2013, Apni Shala’s initiatives have directly supported over 16,000 children and benefited over 400,000 more through training for educators and curriculum support. Our work is informed by the model lab school in Mankhurd (Mumbai), Khoj, where we are developing a holistic, well-being-centered approach to education for students from low-income communities.

We are currently working in partnership with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) and other organisations to support 20 schools serving 6000+ students, their families and educators.

For many children growing up in poverty, life demands emotional support far earlier than it should. Uncertainty around food, safety, family income, or school continuity often becomes part of everyday life. These experiences affect a child’s emotional wellbeing on how they feel, think, and connect to the world.

Yet, mental health support is often the first thing that is missing in under-resourced communities.

This is why the #MannHithMeinJaari Campaign matters deeply.

Through our school- and community-based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives, we work with children who face systemic barriers not to “fix” them, but to let them explore and identify diverse emotions they experience. We support children in building emotional language, confidence, and problem-solving skills so they can navigate stress, relationships, and change with greater resilience. Likewise, we work with their teachers, principals, parents, other caregivers, and government officials to build caring ecosystems.

For a child experiencing poverty, SEL can mean:

  • Having words for big emotions instead of carrying them alone
  • Learning conflict resolution instead of internalizing fear or anger
  • Feeling seen and valued in spaces where survival often takes priority

When we invest in the mental health of children from under-resourced backgrounds, we’re not just supporting individual well-being; we’re strengthening families, classrooms, and entire communities.

Because every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves the chance to grow with dignity, safety, and hope.

Here’s how you can contribute:

  • Donate Today. With INR 3000, you can impact a student's life for a whole year.
  • Share the campaign with at least 2 friends.
