Pandutalab, in Dewas, is one of the most under-resourced regions of the Tehsil above a 90% tribal population (Bhil, Bhilala, Korku, Tadvi, and Barela). Government schools barely function due to poor infrastructure and absent teachers while private schools impart sub-standard education and charge a high fee, unaffordable to the majority. Children typically return to the farms after school for lack of opportunities and worse, fall prey to inhumane money lenders. Ravi (name changed) is a farmer who was tied to the back of a money lender’s bike and dragged for hundreds of meters. Why? Because he was ‘unable to pay off a loan of Rs 40,000’ even after serving as a BONDED LABOUR FOR 8 YEARS! Without the ability to calculate the actual interest, Ravi was maimed and his son had to drop out of school to replace him as a bonded labourer. Thousands of such marginalised farmers in this drought-stricken land are exploited for numerous reasons, one being their poor formal education and inability to calculate.
One Star Public School was established by a group of enthusiastic tribal youth who were disgusted by the exploitation in their village of Pandutalab. The school serves as a beacon of change in the village and Barefoot Edu is working to make this school a model for quality and teacher training. We have already designed and erected a playground embedded with math and science concepts and now, together with the mathematics specialists Dinasim, we intend to make learning math a fun, exciting process through local practices and play. Dinasim’s UNMATH Box helps explore concepts like profit and loss through carrom and marbles.
OSPS shall be the lab school to build the capacity of math teachers in the village to deliver quality and contextualised education.

We will improve the quality of content and pedagogy for Mathematics in 3 schools:
1) Employ a permanent math teacher trainer at One Star Public School
2) Contextualise math for tribal communities of Dewas
3) Conduct regular teacher training in 3 under-resourced schools [36 sessions per year]
4) Conduct regular student workshops
5) Have a tonne of fun
Math4All will directly reach 3 schools, 6 Math teachers and 900 students in the Year One!
