Story

My Mental Health Story: Why This Campaign Matters

As a young person, I’ve witnessed firsthand how mental health challenges—including anxiety, depression, and isolation—can silently shape and sometimes limit lives. For years, I struggled to open up about my own feelings, believing I had to “tough it out” alone. It was only through a courageous school-based awareness session that I realized what I was experiencing was valid, common, and treatable. Reaching out for support was, in fact, a sign of strength.

Why Mental Health for Youth Matters

Mental health isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a widespread challenge for young people worldwide:

  • One in seven adolescents ages 10–19 experiences a mental disorder.
  • Around 40% of high schoolers report persistent sadness or hopelessness, and 20% seriously consider suicide.
  • Suicide remains the third leading cause of death among young people globally.

Despite the scale, most youth do not receive the support they need. In 2023, more than half of young people who struggled with their mental health did not receive adequate care, and a third didn’t seek help at all. Stigma, lack of awareness, and not knowing how to access support are major barriers.

The Root Causes: Stigma, Lack of Knowledge, and Poor Help-Seeking

The roots of the mental health crisis are complex.

  • Stigma and Shame: Many fear being judged or dismissed if they speak up.
  • Lack of Knowledge: Without education, youth may not recognize warning signs or know where to turn.
  • Help-Seeking Behaviors: Cultural, social, and systemic barriers, combined with inadequate resources, make it tough for youth to access care.

Our Mission: Education and Empowerment

With your support, our campaign will:

  • Run on-campus and online awareness workshops where youth learn about mental health, coping skills, signs and symptoms, and peer support.
  • Distribute mental health toolkits: practical guides for self-care, resource directories, and guidance on how to seek help.
  • Expand outreach by collaborating with schools and youth organizations. We’ll reach the most vulnerable and underserved youth, including those with limited access to mental health services.

Why International Youth Day 2025 Is a Turning Point

This year’s International Youth Day on August 12, themed “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” recognizes youth as not just passive recipients but also agents of change: innovators and leaders in their communities. Now, more than ever, it’s vital that we invest in youth-led projects, empower peer educators, and create spaces where young people can be heard and supported.

Your Support Makes the Difference

Every contribution helps us:

  • Bring essential workshops into new schools and communities.
  • Provide toolkits to those who need them most.
  • Train peer mentors and leaders to become mental health advocates. This ensures the work sustains itself.

By investing in youth mental health, you’re building stronger, more resilient communities—today and for the future. Help us turn awareness into real, lasting change this International Youth Day.

Let’s champion youth-led mental health action, together.
