Educating a Primary child in Muktangan

In recent years in India, universal access to education at the primary level has been almost achieved. This, alone, is not enough! Both teachers and children experience a lack of engagement in the current, mark-orientated system of education. This has led to poor literacy and numeracy, learning levels. What is needed, in addition to improving literacy and numeracy, is a more meaningful, fun– filled, holistic learning, which will strengthen the child’s natural, creative thinking and collaborative skills preparing them more adequately for their future in the twenty-first century.

This is how Muktangan makes a difference:

•Integrated: We operate a teacher education center which is at the heart of the 7 municipal schools we run. Rigorous classroom internships for teacher trainees & weekly curriculum design meetings with qualified teacher educators enhance cross fertilization of learning's.

•Pedagogy: While the syllabus followed is of the State Board, our methods of teaching the children is majorly activity based (constructivist) giving importance to conceptual understanding, self-thinking, creativity, collaboration etc.

•Contextual & Relevant: 100% teachers are from the community and not only understand the children's aspirations and though process but also customize the curriculum to make it relevant for the community children. The Muktangan Teacher Education Center has developed 29 learning modules based on continuous child observation in the classroom.

•Holistic & Inclusive: Our holistic program ensures that each child is getting development in the social, emotional, values, physical and aesthetic (music, dance, drama, art and craft) domains. >12% of children in Muktangan schools are differently-abled but each of them are included though Individual Education Plans.

Muktangan is working towards building a nation of high-performing, happy children. (high-performing signifies creative problem solvers and conscientious decision makers, while happy reflects the social and emotional well being of the individual.)

Muktangan also wishes to enable access of quality education to every child in our country, through our partnerships with Government and non-governmental organizations, working at grassroots level.
