Three years ago, Vivek Sir, a government school teacher in Mahidpur, walked into his classroom with a dream that no child should feel left behind. He started with a belief that classroom management begins with understanding, not punishment. In a Teacher Circle as a fortnightly practice happening at their school, when teachers were scratching heads around workable attention getters to be used, he shared a creative technique using colored scissors to signal silence (red) and participation (green). This simple tool transformed how children responded in class. In Hidi village, Ujjain, educators like Sanjay Sir and Anil Sir had a dream that students take a leap, develop stronger verbal proficiency and are able to demonstrate it. A year of deep practice within and beyond the school hours and two of their students won Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in the national Tata Building India Essay Competition.
The spark that teachers like Vivek, Sanjay, Anil, Jitendra and educators like these carry is not about teaching more, but nurturing deeper. But sparks like these often struggle to sustain in silos. In just three years, 28% of teachers we worked with were transferred or retired. Many are overwhelmed by administrative responsibilities. Many feel isolated as their schools function as stand-alone units, disconnected from the community and from other educators who share the same vision.
Why do we need your support?
Government salaries ensure teachers’ livelihoods. What they often don’t ensure is the ecosystem of care and community that allows an educator to grow as a nurturer.
To truly support teachers like Vivek Sir, we need to:
We are confident that change will come. What we need are anchors of support at two levels - one, local - contextual level and, two, a proximate group level . This bottom-inspired movement of holistic and quality education will create a strong credibility for public education space at the grassroot level which is the only space that links education with equity and dignity.
The Big Picture
When teachers are empowered to connect the everyday textbook activities with the bigger purpose, schools no longer remain just buildings. They become living, thriving ecosystems where communities, children, and educators grow together.
Through Support for Sampoornata, we invite you to stand with teachers who are choosing to nurture beyond duty — who are holding the spark of child-centric and community-centric education.
