Tribal student hostel for Girls and Boys

Ambalamoola, located in the interior Western Ghats has many remote tribal people mainly living off the forest and working as casual labourers. The Tamil Nadu Government is supporting them to become part of mainstream society by providing primary education upto the 8th Standard (We run the school on behalf of the government). However after the 8th standard the students are expected to join the regular government school on their own, to complete their studies. This seldom happens as no hostel or further support is provided to the students by the government, and traveling daily from their villages is not practical. As a result, most the students drop out of school after the 8th standard, and never complete their education.

NTWTS attempts to bridge this gap by providing hostel, boarding and tuition facilities to tribal students encouraging them to complete the12th standard and beyond. We currently support 56 children, 51 of whom attend the local high school and 5 attend vocational training centres. Without this facility, support and encouragement, most of these children would drop out of school entirely and revert to foraging in the forest. We were initially supported by a corporate donor and then for 2 years by the Mar Munning Trust, UK. These sources are unable to continue their support, however the tribal students still need ours. We therefore seek your help either by way of sponsoring a tribal child for a month / year or by contributing towards facilities for the hostel. Supporters of NWTWS are always welcome to visit and interact with the students.

Most of these these tribal villages do not have a single college educated person among them and hardly any who have completed their schooling. It is our belief that if we could put even a few students through school / college and demonstrate their employ-ability, it would have a cascading effect on development of the entire community.
