Paving schools in the Himalayas with bricks made of waste plastic

I am fundraising for a cause close to my heart. In 2018 we decided to add plastic waste to the list of problems that we wanted to do something about. Over the last two years, my organisation and I have been trying to work with low value plastic waste (low value, multi layer packaging, chips packets etc) and waste workers.

We're using this plastic as gravel to be used in interlocking pavement tiles. We were chosen among 12 startups by the Indian Oil Corporation startup program to mentor our project on 'Providing sustainable livelihoods through low value waste plastic'.

We aim to pave 500 sq meters of the play area and assembly area in for a primary school in Chamasari village (12 kms from Dehradun). This activity will divert 4000 kgs of low value waste plastic.

We have developed a process of collecting this waste plastic and processing it in a way where it can be combined with cement without compromising on the strength of our interlocking tiles.

These funds will help us

-utilise littered low value plastic

- encouraging households/citizens to segregate at source

- providing paved common and play areas to remote schools in Uttarakhand.

- generating livelihoods for waste workers/rag pickers
