Campaign by United Way India
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The lack of reliable electricity in rural areas is hindering the economic progress of villages and impacting residents' basic quality of life. Presently, over 100 villages in the 24 PGS (South) District of West Bengal, as well as other nearby districts in West Bengal and Odisha, suffer from unreliable grid electricity supply. In instances where grid electricity is accessible, it often exhibits extremely poor quality, with line voltages as low as 130-140V, well below the standard 230V. Additionally, frequent and prolonged power outages lasting 6-10 hours per day exacerbate the situation. This has been the prevailing circumstance since the inception of United Way's social transformation interventions in 2010.
In recent years, CSR-supported solar electrification initiatives have successfully illuminated over 5 villages, with many receiving support from generous donors. United Way India urges to support solar electrification efforts in targeted areas of the West Bengal Region. This initiative aims to facilitate reverse migration and promote sustainable living among residents.
