Story

Stepping out to mountains; the mere thought of it overpowers the concern for enjoyment so much so that our brains stop paying any heed to the serious issue of environmental degradation. It is then the person tends to overlook the garbage he is dumping along the way. This continuous issue has urged us to think that if garbage over powers, would we really have something much less a thought of enjoyment, thought of leisure? Nature ends, tourism ends and so does the beautiful 'mere' thought. Only occasionally do we bother about the trash generated during our leisure stay on a holiday. It becomes a serious issue when the same indiscipline behaviour is taken to mountains - The Himalayas.

Our projects are focused on clean-up drives, building material recovery facilities and introducing circular economy around waste management in the foothills of the Himalayas.

• Seed Thought: It began with a need to sensitise tourists, travellers, trekkers and locals for the protection of the Himalayas, which for many years have silently accumulated dump, as a result of anthropogenic activity.

• Our Vision: To preserve the environment and its natural ecology to make it a perfect abode for its inhabitants & regulating the circular economy

• How we achieve that: By dedicatedly working in the Himalayan Region through planned campaigns & developing infrastructure (Material Recovery Facility) for the protection of the environment, people and wildlife.

We started building our first Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in village Rakcham (Kinnaur, HP) in the month of July and we finished our work by June 2021. Operations at our MRF started in August 2022. Currently we have 6 Material recovery facilities across Himachal Pradesh.

a) No waste dumps in local water bodies like Waterfalls and Streams; ensuring cleaner water naturally

b) Reduction in presence of plastic waste from source to destination

c) Ensuring cleanliness of natural water sources in remote villages or tourist spots; which would also decrease the plastic water bottle waste as the impact

Since last year July 2022 we have started the operations of 4 new MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities) wherein we collect roughly 5 tonnes of non biodegradable waste daily which other wise would have been dumped, landfilled or burnt openly.

Step one to setup an MRF is to identify locations/villages/town which has huge tourist footfall in a short span of time.

Step two is to engage with the administration/Panchayat/Concerned departments to understand absence of waste management facilities and come to an understanding of a way forward. The biggest stakeholders are indigenous communities hence a clarity of there participation is a must.

Considering the Himalayan topography and procuring land to setup waste management units is a challenge hence step three is to get land from forest department.

Step four is to get funds to construct MRF, install required machinery and a couple of vehicles to collect waste door to door and clear legacy waste sites around the village/town

Now comes the most crucial part which is to operate Material Recovery Facility, make is sustainable and create a supply chain (reverse logistics)- This is the most time consuming process.

a) It is imperative to collect segregated waste hence engaging & teaching community to segregate the waste takes time. Although we start the process during the construction of the MRF but sometimes it's not possible.

b) User fees - If its a village then we mainly focus to collect fees from commercial properties only.

c) Selling the recyclable materials to the recyclers and generating revenue but considering the distance the logistical expenses are way too high to reach the goal.

So what's the way forward ?

We always try to keep the operations cost to a minimum, we take tips from unorganised sector to understand smooth operations.

Now we are on our way to build three more facilities in the year 2024. Lets hope we succeed

Thank you
