Hopelessness and despair hang over them like a wet blanket.

According to a survey by the Thane Municipal Corporation published in November 2019, the city of Thane has nearly a million people residing in 252 slum communities.

Slum residents consistently face problems many of the population will never have to deal with. This includes limited access to water (not necessarily clean), dilapidated overcrowded homes, narrow alleyways littered with garbage, sewer and stagnant water creating unsanitary living conditions.

Due to working conditions, wage structures, social security and living conditions all being areas of concern, personal healthcare isn’t high on their list of priorities. Hence minor ailments become serious problems, treatments by resident quacks make matters worse, loans taken at high interest rates to pay off hospital bills lead to financial stress. Many here are emotionally drained too because of a lack of apathy by family members and society, and the stigma attached to certain diseases.

These pockets of poverty lead to poor quality of life as malnutrition and diseases continue to thrive here. There is just no escaping it.

The issue of healthcare in these areas is a large one however, even small solutions can make great differences. 

Our JA project provides:

·  Quality Care & Treatments - Healthcare provided through home visits, follow-up with doctors, guidance on health-related issues, support for hospital admissions etc.

·  Free Assistance - Economic assistance, medical sponsorship, clothes and medical aid

·  Medical camps - Testing for diseases such as cancer, HIV, TB, minor ailments and Eye screening via reputable hospitals

·  Liaising with Government Primary Health Centers and Anganwadi Centres - Supporting their health and nutrition program

·  Awareness Sessions & Community meetings - Educating people on current and pressing issues, misleading information related to health, hygiene, care and treatment, government benefit schemes, etc

·  Covid Care - Testing and Vaccination

·  Personal Support

• Linking individuals with relevant services, enabling them to access and utilize various benefits offered by the government or NGOs
• Celebration of days

We aim to provide services to these communities that transition them from lifestyles of ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving.’ Our vision is to see individuals enjoying good health, improved lifestyles, and overall wellness through increasing awareness, offering services and providing care and support. The impact our programs wish to see include:

• Early detection of health issues resulting in early intervention, primary care and treatment for individuals 
• Reduction and elimination of avoidable and curable diseases  
• Improved quality of life due to greater access to quality healthcare, medication and government resources
• Improvement in the nutrition and immunity of people thereby protecting them from risks and diseases
• Enhanced institutional capabilities 
• Improved Health and hygiene amongst children and teenagers
• Awareness of the need and value of good health - promoting new, healthier practices among communities
• Implementation of preventive measures by individuals and families
• Improved physical and mental health of children and young adults 
• Freedom from individuals experiencing stigma, fear and hopelessness around their bodies and health
• Increased quality of life, overall wellness and joy in the lives of individuals
