Story

In 2011, world leaders assembled at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and acknowledged that the global burden and threat of noncommunicable diseases constitutes one of the major challenges for development in the twenty-first century, which undermines social and economic development throughout the world and threatens the achievement of internationally agreed upon development goals.

World leaders noted with grave concern the vicious cycle whereby NCDs and their risk factors worsen poverty, while poverty contributes to the rising rate of NCDs, posing a threat to public health, economic, and social development.

Similarly, they also noted that NCDs and their risk factors led to increased burdens on individuals, families and communities, including impoverishment from long-term treatment and care costs, and to a loss of productivity that threatens household income and leads to productivity loss for individuals and their families, and to the economies of countries, making NCDs a contributing factor to poverty and hunger, which may have a direct impact on the achievement of the millennium development goals.

Cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes mellitus, cancer, chronic lung diseases, accidents and injuries are the major noncommunicable diseases in India.

For Prevention and Control of the above-said diseases, we are implementing the Project - Nidan Health Care relating to Non-Communicable Diseases and Poverty Issues. We will implement this project with activities like base line information collection, development of awareness and education material, health check up camps, counselling of the patients and their families.

For tackling cancer, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases, and strokes (NPCDCS), we aim to promote positive lifestyle changes.

Noncommunicable, or chronic diseases are diseases of long duration and generally, slow progression. The four main types of noncommunicable diseases are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are usually caused by genetic or lifestyle factors. Four types of NCDs – cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases – account for almost two-thirds of all deaths globally, with 80 per cent of these occurring in low- and middle-income families.

Reducing the major risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) – tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and the harmful use of alcohol – is the focus of WHO's work to prevent deaths from NCDs.

We are addressing this issues in this Project Nidan in 20 Villages from Miraj Taluka of Sangli District of Maharashtra

-Increased level of awareness among people in the project area.

-Significant change in the lifestyle of general people due to awareness inputs.

-Early detection of high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus, resulting into lower complications.

-Early age deaths will be reduced.

-The work efficiency of people will increase, which will directly address the poverty issue of the area.

-Tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and harmful use of alcohol will be reduced.
