Project Potential: COVID-19 Awareness and Vaccination Drive

If you had to choose between food or getting vaccinated, what would you choose?

According to scientific evidence, vaccination is the best way to protect people from COVID-19 and to prevent avoidable deaths during the second wave of the pandemic. Our goal is to support 10,000+ daily wage workers in getting vaccinated over the next 3 months.

However, we work primarily with daily wage workers in Kishanganj District, Bihar, and they face a difficult choice:

1.  Take the day off from work to get vaccinated at the cost of not feeding their families that evening

2. Or, skip vaccination to earn their wages at the risk of getting COVID-19

Given this choice, vaccination rates are extremely low in the areas we serve, where most people work as daily wage workers. This issue is compounded by low awareness of the benefits of vaccination and by misinformation.

Working with and through community leaders, we are spreading awareness about the benefits of vaccination and are providing a ration packet to each daily wage earning family whose members get vaccinated.

Place: Thakurganj Block, Kishanganj District, Bihar, India

Number of villages in target area: 350

Selection criteria: Families whose main earner is a daily wage worker and who are currently struggling to get vaccinated due to an inability to take time off from work.

Steps involved:

1. Work with trusted community leaders who we worked with on relief in the first stage of the pandemic 
2. Local community leaders will identify eligible families and verify those who get vaccinated 
3. Provide rations to eligible families through local kirana (grocery) shops

The kits will feed a family of 5 for 6 days and contain: rice, daal, potato, onion, salt, mustard oil, soap, and masks.

• 50,000 with improved food security
