Story of Change

Riya, Meghna and Priyanka are 14 year old girls from West Bengal. The three friends love dancing, painting and reading but lately they have been too worried to do any of that. A month ago their friend, Titli, was married off and stopped coming to school. They can’t reach her, and they’re realizing with heartbreak that she may never return to the life and dreams she once had.

Child marriage robs young girls of their childhoods and often leads to school dropouts, teen pregnancies, maternal & infant mortalities. At just 14, Titli now faces the harsh realities of child marriage, and sadly, she's not alone. 

In West Bengal alone, 42% girls end up getting married before they are 18.

16.4% end up getting pregnant as young as the age of 15.

15% girls end up experiencing online abuse and 25% girls experience gender based violence in their homes and schools.

When Riya, Meghna and Priyanka shared their friend’s story with facilitators from Project Tamanna, they expressed a desire to raise awareness about the issue. They couldn't help their friend, but are hopeful that perhaps they can help other young girls.

Barriers like gender inequality and stereotypes often hold girls back. But as Peer Leaders of Rangeen Khidki Foundation, these three are taking action. Trained in child rights, POCSO, reporting mechanisms, and leadership, they now use their skills to safeguard child rights and inspire change in their communities.

As Peer Leaders in their schools, they host creative programs to help girls understand their autonomy and make informed choices. They also involve teachers and parents, building an ecosystem of trust and safety.

Currently, many young girls similar to these 3 are among our 160 Peer Leaders who are bringing change in their schools and communities.
