Protection and Holistic Development of Adolescent Girls

Many teenage girls are now being exploited, sexually abused, and even murdered. Such incidences are being repeated unnoticed. The victims are harassed, confirmed to perpetual torture. These atrocities are not only found among girls in cities and towns but also in remote villages and in slums where girls are always under threat.

Our organisation has experience in conducting awareness program for girls studying from 8th to 10th girls in four schools in Goonipalayam, Pondavakkam, Katchur and Uthukotai villages. The program covers child protection policy, child rights, child abuse, sexual reproductive health, and also conducts rallies in which more than 750 girls participated. However, girls in Chennai slums and villages need more intensive training.

The project covers 500 adolescent girls studying in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th std selected from 5 schools in Chennai city slums and 5 schools in remote villages in rural areas in Tiruvallur District. These adolescent girls are more susceptible and under threat of exploitation and sexual abuse due to unawareness on how to protect themselves.

1. Holistic development involves physical, psychological, emotional, educational, and spiritual well-being.

2. Awareness of rights, responsibilities, knowledge of various agencies to contact in emergencies.

3. Impart actual training in meditation, yoga and fundamental training in martial art.

4. Counselling is an important aspect of the project.

5. Contact sources for emergency help.

 Meditation and Yoga practice enrich the girls with the power of concentration, psychological well being, self-control in adolescent girls.

 Basic martial arts creates and gives confidence and develop self-defence.

 Psychological problems solved through counselling.

 Girls learn about their own child rights.

 Girls learn about the importance of nutritious food.

 The girls will be made aware of the importance of sexual reproductive health.

 Awareness will be given for them to know where and whom to be approached during emergencies.

 They gain the confidence to report their problems to authorities.
