Provide care and education for children in Spoorthi Girl Care Center

According to a 2009 UNICEF report, India has the largest and fastest-growing population of street children in the world. Above all there are 25 million children living rough on the streets, with no access to parental or formal care.

There are many reasons why a girl child needs care and protection (formal care). Some of the common defined circumstances are demise of family member(s), no permanent shelter, cases of domestic abuse and violence, trafficking etc. Unfortunately, when it comes to providing shelter and care to these young girl children, there isn't enough.

In Visakhapatnam, until recently there was no home where girl children who are rescued from trafficking, abuse or a vulnerable situation could go. The situation was such that after being rescued, there was no safe place for these girls.

Spoorthi girl care center has been started to address this gap. The center is a unique place in the city of Visakhapatnam that strives to provide facilities for stay, (short or long), food and health care, counseling, formal, non-formal education and vocational training. The center believes that home care is the best care and has the capacity to accommodate up to 30 children.

The center also provides legal aid (if required) for the trafficked children.

At any time, 25-30 children stay at home. Around 20 children go to the nearby private schools while the others attend vocational training sessions. So far 25 children have been integrated back to their home. 3 children have completed their 10th class exam and are attending polytechnic and fashion technology diploma courses.
