The Sundarbans region, particularly the Pathar Pratima block, is marked by chronic poverty, geographical isolation, and recurring climate-induced hardships. Families depend mainly on small-scale fishing, agriculture, and daily labour, which provide low and unstable incomes. As a result, the socio-economic condition of local households remains fragile, and early childhood development often receives limited attention due to financial constraints and persistent survival challenges.
Within this context, the ICDS centres are expected to play a vital role in supporting children’s nutrition, early learning, and holistic development. However, the most of the ICDS centres in the block are functioning with severely inadequate infrastructure and learning materials. Many centres lack even the most basic items such as chairs, tables, mats for sitting, charts, posters, rhyme books, picture books, and other Teaching and Learning Materials (TLM). Essential equipment such as weighing machines, storage facilities, and basic tools for health and nutrition monitoring are also missing. The physical condition of the centres is often poor, with little to no decorations or child-friendly elements that encourage joyful learning.
The primary cause of this situation is the long-term absence of material supply and infrastructure support from the Government, which currently provides only Mid-Day Meals and honorariums for the Anganwadi Worker and Helper. For several years, replenishment of educational and infrastructural resources has not taken place, leaving the centres to function with outdated or nonexistent materials. Local communities, due to their low income levels, are unable to contribute to the centres' needs, further deepening the resource gap.
As a result, the extent of the problem is significant: over 50 ICDS centres in the block are currently under-resourced, directly affecting thousands of children in the 3–6 age group. The lack of proper learning tools and child-friendly environments limits cognitive, emotional, and social development, while inadequate health and nutrition equipment affects growth monitoring and early detection of malnutrition. Without timely intervention, these children face long-term developmental disadvantages, reinforcing cycles of poverty and vulnerability in the Sundarbans. The collected donation aims to address these gaps and create a supportive foundation for early childhood development in the region.
Objectives of the project:
· To improve the physical learning environment and basic infrastructure of 25 ICDS centres in Pathar Pratima block by ensuring safe, clean, and child-friendly spaces.
· To enhance access to age-appropriate Teaching–Learning Materials (TLMs) that promote early childhood education, creativity, and cognitive development.
· To strengthen nutrition and growth-monitoring services through the provision of essential equipment such as weighing machines and others.
· To support Anganwadi Workers and Helpers with adequate resources for effective service delivery.
· To improve overall child well-being, early learning outcomes, and school readiness among young children in the Sundarbans.
