Rebuilding and Reconstruction Idukki District after Kerala Floods

Kerala has been hit by the heaviest monsoon rainfalls since 1924, causing unseen floods and landslides in all districts among the state. Almost 400 people lost their lives and close to one million citizens had to be evacuated to emergency shelters. In Idukki district, one of the poorest and marginalised districts within Kerala, around 80% of the farmers have lost their crops while hundreds of houses and shelters, mostly belonging to some of the poorest families, were destroyed or partially damaged.

The Indian government is overwhelmed with the situation and can only arrange for basic immediate relief. Official departments will not be able to sufficiently support the affected population in the long term in reconstructing their houses and existences, which is why additional support through external agencies is strongly needed.

In Idukki district, VOSARD has been active since 1998 and over the years could establish a very successful network among the community in the remote villages. This setup ensures an effective and quick supply of needed building materials and crops to repair and reconstruct houses and farm land.

For their work VOSARD is fully dependent on project partners which is why the organisation relies on you: especially over the long-term funds are needed to support the displaced and affected families in rebuilding their houses and farm land in order to bring their lives back to normality.
