Story

Resettlement of the poor from the city to the outskirts like Perumbakkam impacts not only residents’ livelihoods and access to municipal services but also children’s education. We argued that resettlement of families in colonies such as Kannagi Nagar, Semmanchery and Perumbakkam disrupt children’s education. After the floods in Chennai in November and December 2015, the Tamil Nadu state government started evicting families living on river banks and resettling them in its colonies in Perumbakkam.

There are many interlinked potential risks intrinsic to displacement, which are including expropriation of land removes the main foundation upon which people’s productive systems, commercial activities, and livelihoods are constructed, risk of losing wage employment for those employed in enterprises or services and creating new jobs is difficult and requires substantial investment.

Economic marginalization is accompanied by social and psychological marginalization which is expressed as a drop in social status, loss of confidence in society and in themselves, a feeling of injustice and deepened vulnerability. Displacement-induced social stress and psychological trauma are sometimes accompanied by outbreaks of relocation. Education, health, nutrition, social safety and security are far away from being satisfaction for children.

This project will provide access to a quality education to deserved 120 children through 3 Motivation Centers; prepare children at After School Activities. Children will be facilitated to making over schoolwork, earning credits, or filling in gaps in their learning. They will also supported or encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, drama, and clubs.

Life Skill Training will intermittently organized to strengthen their ability to face challenges, which will develop positive effect on their attendance, academic work, behavior, and ability to make friends.

In order to reduce the burdens of parents we would procure educational materials such as notebooks, stationery, chapels and school bags. We would also deliver nutritional supplementary food during every evening at Motivation Centers. National Day celebration will be organized such as Republic Day, Women’s Day, World Environment Day, Independent Day and Child Rights day.

Young adult women in slum will trained on job oriented trades like tailoring and garment making trade, retail sales and computer billing trades. A month long training would provide employment opportunities in nearby super markets or any sales centers, we will organize employment melah and so on.

Children will be remain in the same school, they remain connected to friends in the school and avoid the academic and emotional challenges that can be caused by poor performance or changing schools. This prevents disruption in their education, eases their transition to a new living arrangement, and ensures that community supports are still in place. There will reduction in the dropout and working children, whenever found they will placed in relevant schools.

At schools level, concerns of school children raised during parent-teacher meetings will met with community mobilization. At parent level grievances raised will be met and reduced compliant report about schools as well as children. 100 percent retention maintained at school level and student teachers ratio will improved.

About 300 young women will be employed through attaining job oriented training and placed in safe enterprises. This employment would create advancement in their family economy and increased buying capacity.

Different stakeholders such as individuals, agencies, other organizations, and government will be involved in formulating plans for the provision or improvement of services. This will enable them to identify their roles and contributions to the overall plan for service provision to this special group.
