Children growing up in slums experience a rough childhood. High responsibility and neglect all contribute to undermining the self-esteem and dignity of children, which is detrimental to their full social and cognitive development. There is a lot of data available on why children run away from their houses or drop out of school, revealing many reasons for doing so. Some reasons are simple, and some are complex. Above all, our educational institutions are no longer able to fulfil the responsibility of helping the young understand life fully. The outmoded curriculum, the burden of several subjects, and poor teaching demotivate the young, and they feel restless. It is also an age of impulsivity and vulnerability, impacted by peer groups and media, resulting in shifts in perception and practice, and defined by decision-making. And all of this contributes to the risk of getting into harmful habits that are spreading among the youth; the data is rather high and growing by the day. Young people are in danger of getting involved in drugs, petty criminality, and self-harm. The biggest reason for engaging in negative behaviours is that young people have so much potential that if they utilize it constructively, they can lead India on a path of continual improvement, but if they use it destructively, they may destroy their own and others' lives.
Through our project "Rhythm," we promote music learning in the slums of Noida. The project is not only focused on their skill development, but the social and personal well-being of all participants is as important as their musical learning.
Our music program will consist of three key aspects:
1) Learning Music: Adolescents at My Perch will receive formal advanced music lessons. Vocal, guitar, drumming, and music composition classes will be offered. We will connect with and collaborate with music schools and universities for these classes so participants can pursue and earn certificates and degrees in music. Along with this, there be workshops on personal growth and development.
2) Community awareness and music workshops: As a community organization, we would like to offer free workshops in the communities. The purpose of these workshops will be to introduce music to more children, use music's therapeutic qualities to help people in the community de-stress and build relationships and bonds with the community through music.
3) Public performances: Public performances are a crucial part of the project. There will be two kinds of public performances: music gatherings, in which we will invite people from the community, local artists, and our children with the idea of learning and creating something together, and promoting music learning by providing a platform to the people of the community who are working in different capacities but have a passion for music. Music gatherings will be small events, mostly at the community level. And the other is a big event at the end of the project, where we are planning to showcase children's learning and progress by organizing a music event. Children will learn how to present themselves and keep the audience engaged. Having to present themselves well on stage, will help boost their self-esteem and confidence as they refine their performance skills.
We use music as a tool to encourage self-expression and creativity. Creative engagement will help increase their confidence, social identity, sense of purpose, and empowerment opportunities. We will use the power of music to bring people together and to nurture both individual and collective identity. Project Rhythm will help participants.
1. Build confidence and self-esteem- They will gain confidence by playing at a public event.
2. Sense of purpose and Identity development -Identifying as musicians and vocalists will give them a sense of purpose.
3. Skill development and financial independence- They can earn and support themselves by teaching music and performing in public.
4. Encourage self-expression and emotion regulation- Our learning approaches will not only emphasize outward learning but will also emphasize internal learning. Knowing one's emotions and feelings, and using music as a form of therapy to process and learn about oneself.
5. Connecting with others: forming social bonds and communities-Singing with others, playing instruments in a group — the richness of shared musical experiences
