Rural Children Education

There are many children, especially those of itinerant workers, who cannot afford even the meagre school fees to continue their education. For some students, their parents simply do not see the need.

These laborers are paid periodically based on the number of days worked, and it is common for paymasters to cheat them by paying less than what they actually deserve. For laborers who do not know how to count, it is quite easy to get scammed.

Tender Heart has opened an after-school program to help reach the needs of these children. Any child who shows up is given basic education in mathematics, reading, writing, and English language. This program is helpful to people of all ages, as the children are encouraged to help their fathers calculate the payments due to them.

The school began over 15 years ago on a piece of unoccupied land in rural India, adjacent to a village which did not have any schools. Initially, the school we set up was not welcomed by the residents of this area. Parents saw no value in having their children (especially their daughters) spending time in a classroom rather than working on family land. We stood firm in the face of threats and started teaching children. Now, the school is an important part of what is still a poor community.
