Story

In the narrow lanes of Pune’s old city, hundreds of young children begin school every year already carrying a heavy load.

At home, they speak Hindi, Marathi, Gorkhali, or Marwadi. At school, they are suddenly expected to learn, listen, and perform in English. Many have never been to preschool. Their homes are crowded, routines are unstable, and parents work long hours to make ends meet.

By the time these children reach Grade 2, nearly half are unable to read simple text or do basic math. What often shows up first, however, is not academic failure — but restlessness, withdrawal, aggression, or silence.

Over the past year, we learned something important:

These are not learning problems.

They are safety problems.

What We Learned on the Ground

In early 2025, we worked with children in Grades 1–4 who were far behind in reading. When we taught them in small, emotionally safe groups, their learning accelerated rapidly. Children who had been labelled “weak” began reading with confidence in just a few months.

But when we tried to scale this to a full classroom, learning collapsed again. The room was dysregulated. Children could not sit, listen, or explore. Teaching became firefighting.

So we went to the children’s homes.

What we found was clear:

Children who arrived calm had predictable routines, warm caregiver relationships, and simple rhythms at home. Children who arrived dysregulated lived in chaos — late nights, conflict, noise, hunger, and uncertainty.

The insight was unmistakable:

Learning cannot begin where safety has not been built.

Why We Are Starting with Kindergarten

If we want learning gaps not to widen later, we must begin before they form.

Kindergarten is where children first learn:

  • How to sit in a group
  • How to wait, listen, speak, and try
  • How to feel safe with adults outside home
  • How learning feels in their body

This fundraiser supports a one-year learning pilot (2026–27) for 100 children aged 4–8, focusing primarily on Junior and Senior Kindergarten, with continued support in Grades 1 and 2.

What We Will Do Differently

Instead of rushing children into worksheets and outcomes, we will focus on foundations that last.

  • Emotionally safe classrooms
  • Predictable routines, songs, rituals, and calm adult presence that help children regulate and belong.
  • Play-based literacy and numeracy invitations
  • Learning that emerges through exploration, language, rhythm, and concrete materials — not pressure.
  • Strong home–school connection
  • Simple, joyful activities for parents to do at home in their own languages, building continuity and trust.
  • Close observation and reflection
  • Weekly documentation of children’s emotional, social, and learning growth to understand what truly works.

This is not a “program” to be delivered.

It is a learning journey — for children, teachers, families, and us.

What Your Support Makes Possible

The ₹5,00,000 raised will help us:

  • Work consistently with 100 children across the foundational years
  • Train and support teachers to build calm, safe classroom rhythms
  • Conduct home visits to understand and strengthen children’s learning environments
  • Document what works — so this learning can inform future classrooms and teacher practice
Why This Matters

When children feel safe, they try.

When they try, learning follows.

By starting early — and starting right — we can prevent years of struggle, failure, and loss of confidence later on.

Your support helps ensure that a child’s first experience of school is not fear or confusion, but belonging, curiosity, and joy.
