Safecity Campus Ambassadors

Sexual and gender-based violence affects one in three women and girls around the world. In India, there is a rape every 15 minutes according to the national crime research bureau. Most women and girls are afraid to speak up, report it and file an official complaint. Thus leading to a data gap which further makes the issue invisible. Further due to the silence, many do not know how to recognise, identify or challenge incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, thus normalising it and making it part of our daily routine.

We will train 100 Safecity Campus Ambassadors to be peer mentors and first responders for their friends on college and school campuses. Our research shows that most young people do not go to their parents or teachers to complain about sexual and gender-based violence but instead tell a friend who in most cases does not know what to do. Our programme will train young people in the age group 18-25 to be Safecity Campus Ambassadors. They will be trained in gender sensitivity, challenging unconscious bias, recognising and identifying various forms of SGBV including digital harassment, bystander intervention, knowledge of laws and rights and use of Safecity data to challenge the status quo. Each of them will have to undertake a safety project on their college/school campus.
