Sampark Smart Shala

In India primary education in government schools is very poor, many children of class 3, 4 and 5 do not know how to speak, write or construct even a simple sentence in English. Students do not have basic concepts of mathematics, and many students fail to perform simple operations of mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication or division of numbers.

We follow a 5 step model of change to drastically improve the access to quality education in government schools and improve the learning outcomes for children. Our flagship program, Sampark Smart Shala (SSS), is a learning outcome focused intervention that innovatively uses technology, a voice mascot called “Sampark Didi”, toys, stories games, teacher training modules combined with rigorous monitoring in collaboration with state governments bringing smiles on the faces of 10 million children across 84,000 schools at the cost of just $1 per child/annum.

Our goal is to improve the access to quality education in government schools with the following strategies:

• Use of technology and innovative approaches to impact and improve learning levels in children studying in Government Primary Schools.
• Disrupt and inspire the classroom practices to enhance learning environments
• To enable, empower and inspire teachers to become the facilitators of learning in government classrooms

Although our impact is measured in terms of improvement in learning outcomes amng children, our impact area also includes teachers.

IMPACT ON CHILDREN: A third-party assessment by Feedback Consulting for 2019-2020, showed a remarkable increase in the percentage of children who answered grade level questions in Math & English:

• 84% in Haryana compared to 70% in 2018-19
• 56% in Chhattisgarh compared to 22% in control group with no intervention
• 57% in Jharkhand compared to 18% in control group with no intervention

IMPACT ON TEACHERS (Internal Monitoring Data):

• 95% plus attendance in training. The training and program are rated 4.5 on a scale of 5. (SMS Feedback)
• Up to 58% of schools got grade ‘A’. Our Sparks audit schools by visiting them unannounced. 56% of teachers completely own and execute the program within two years.
• 30% reduction in the teacher’s workload (FGDs with teachers)
