Story

Sand is the most extracted mineral on earth, and the bulk of sand being used in construction in India is extracted from our rivers. This rampant, unchecked and often illegal sand mining has devastating impacts on river ecosystems and wildlife, as well as communities that live along, and depend on, the river.

India Sand Watch is an open-data project enabling collection, annotation & archiving of data related to sand mining in India, to create accountability in this unregulated and violent sector and ensure better governance and protection of our rivers.

The different data modules (News reports, Tender documents, Survey reports, Court documents, Case reports, and Guidelines & Analysis) of sand mining on Indian rivers archived and collated on the India Sand Watch platform. Check out the platform and view the different report types here - https://sandwatch.envmonitoring.in/

The platform also shows state-wise distribution of sand mining data across different report types. Click on any state to view its data on sand mining.
