Story
  • Homeless women with psychosocial disabilities, even on the path to well-being, are vulnerable to physical and sexual abuse. Thus, there is a need to have the choice of a shelter. Experiences in the field also showed the lack of any alternatives for homeless men with psychosocial disabilities with co-morbid conditions, elderly men, and the propensity of some of them being sexually and/physically abused.
  • It was in 2010 that Iswar Sankalpa in collaboration with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) established the women’s shelter, Sarbari. The men’s shelter, Marudyan, was started in April 2015.
  • The persons in Iswar Sankalpa’s shelters come from different sections of society where caste, class, gender, violence, lack of supportive social systems intersect to form the vulnerability of the person. The shelters of Iswar Sankalapa, Sarbari and Marudyan, are safe spaces for the recovery and rehabilitation of urban homeless women and men with psychosocial disabilities. It is a space where these persons find respite from the violence experienced while living on the streets— physical and sexual violence; gender-based and structural violence; deprivation from basic needs and human rights.
  • Iswar Sankalpa’s efforts are to empower persons with psychosocial disabilities to become contributing members of society, to be living with dignity and rights.
  • The shelter homes provide a safe place for recovery and rehabilitation to homeless persons, living with psychosocial disabilities. It provides the following care and support— basic needs (like food, clothes, and shelter), medical and psychiatric services, counselling services, alternative therapies (like dance, movement, art and green therapy), restoration and resettlement. The reintegration team works towards access to entitlements, supported employment opportunities for the clients and tracing homes of homeless clients in the shelter. Iswar Sankalpa’s Functional Literacy Programme (FLP) aims at empowering homeless persons with psychosocial disabilities with basic literacy skills that support them in performing everyday tasks like counting, measuring, reading labels on packets, signing their name etc.
  • One of the key approaches of the organisation towards identity building, empowerment and inclusion are through supported livelihood avenues and practices. Our initiatives– Crust & Core (baking and life skills training), Nayagram (Assisted Community Living) and Saksham (Vocational Training Unit)– provide a platform to learn required skills that would facilitate the opportunity to have a sustainable livelihood and inter-dependent living.
  • 745 homeless persons with psychosocial disabilities have accessed shelter care at Iswar Sankalpa since its inception.
  • 240 residents have engaged with the Functional Literacy Programme out of which 74 persons gave the National Institute of Open Schooling examination in total. 75 persons have been engaged in livelihood. 181 persons have received entitlement support. 1850 persons have been reached through awareness events in the shelter since 2010.
  • The dream is to make Kolkata a Mental Health Friendly city. We need your help to break the stigma around mental health and realise this dream. Support the homeless person with psychosocial disability today!
