There is a dire need to sustain quality schooling and education for students from underprivileged communities in times of this crisis when they are finding it hard to even survive.
- As the demand for a tuition-free, English medium school like Saibabapath MPS far outstrips supply in Mumbai - we cannot cater to the overwhelming demand for school admissions. Unfortunately, in COVID times many families sending children to APS have not managed their rations let alone paying school fees worsening the situation with no classes being conducted since lockdown.Mumbai has a total of 2,478 (MCGM, pvt. aided, pvt. unaided) schools that combined serve 8,09,916 students. Within this, schools that serve the underserved – 952 are Affordable Private Schools(APS) serving 3,66,602 students with low quality schooling.
- From being denied mid-day meals to social isolation and challenges of remote learning, underserved students are vulnerable to mental health crisis as they have lost access to educative, nutritional and emotional services that were offered in school.
- Our parent community hails from in and around Lalbaug who are mostly casual laborers and domestic workers. Most of educo SBPMPS students' parents are daily wage earners, taxi drivers, and manual workers. The standstill in the city, due to COVID19, left them with no source of daily income.
- This year we have had a record number of admissions and our school is now touching a 1000 students -the second largest NGO school in Mumbai. We are serving the communities of Lalbaug, Parel, Sewri and Kalachowki.
- In order to prevent the academic slide we executed remote learning solutions for our students. Since lockdown till date we have delivered remote – online and offline classes all grades from Senior KG to 8th. Gradewise learning groups of students are formed over Whatsapp – the most suited choice of platform for easy and affordable connectivity. Academic information, study materials (text content and videos) are shared with the students over the group. Voice notes are posted to explain concepts and clarify doubts. Tests and assessments are conducted over google forms. We distributed learning resources – workbooks, books, worksheets, tabs and others - from the library to ensure that students have access to necessary material to study remotely.
- Since lockdown, together with our parent community we undertook distribution of ration and essentials to support them in surviving the challenges of pandemic and ensuring that our students continue to engage in school remote learning activities.
- Delivered counselling and social - emotional support to students and teachers to help them in coping with the challenges of remote learning.
educo and Mumbai First have come together with #DaanUtsav India's biggest festival of giving from October 2nd to October 8th. We invite you to come forwards and support us in our cause - donate in cash and kind to sustain delivery of education to our students and hope to our community.
- Like the past year we ensured a 100% passing rate in SSC examinations - Despite lockdown our admission count has increased from 900 to 1000+ this academic year, with 100s of children in waitlist.
- Extensive COVID relief to our communities - Since lockdown till date, over 100 tonnes ration & essentials have been successfully distributed to over 1000 households in and around the community in over 16 rounds distribution impacting over 5000+ persons
- Conducted over 2000+ sessions towards counselling, social emotional support and teacher training to deal with challenges of e-learning.
