Rajasthan continues to grapple with a critical and deep-rooted crisis of girl child illiteracy. Despite nationwide educational reforms, a large number of girls in rural and remote areas remain out of school, irregular in attendance, or have never been enrolled. According to the 2011 Census, approximately 9.78 lakh children in Rajasthan are out of school, with girls representing the overwhelming majority. These girls face a web of challenges, from entrenched gender biases and early child marriages to the inaccessibility of nearby schools, economic burdens, and social expectations that prioritize household responsibilities over education. Structural issues such as teacher shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and poor learning outcomes further exacerbate the crisis. Disturbingly, Rajasthan is the only state in India where the school dropout rate among girls continues to rise each year. To address this urgent educational gap, Gayatri Seva Sansthan launched the Shikshalaya initiative, a community-based model specifically tailored for out-of-school, irregular, and never-enrolled children, especially girls aged 4 to 14 years. Shikshalaya creates joyful and inclusive learning environments within the heart of the community, making education both accessible and engaging. It adopts a play-based and theme-based pedagogy grounded in local dialects and contexts, in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP), which emphasizes multilingual education and foundational literacy. The initiative focuses on enhancing the learning levels of children through a structured competency-based curriculum, continuous progress tracking, and individualized academic support. Beyond academics, Shikshalaya cultivates life skills, creativity, leadership, and self-confidence among girls. It encourages strong community ownership through regular village meetings, active involvement of parents, and annual social action projects led by the children. In areas where formal schooling is accessible, the program facilitates the mainstreaming of girls into government schools. In remote regions, it prepares children for board examinations, ensuring that no child is left behind due to lack of opportunity. Shikshalaya envisions a long-term systemic change: To shift societal mindsets around girls’ education, and ensure that every girl, regardless of her background, can learn, thrive, and achieve her full potential.

Gayatri Seva Sansthan (GSS), founded in 1986 and headquartered in Udaipur, Rajasthan, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering rural communities through a model of integrated sustainable development. Rooted in the Gandhian philosophy of Gram Swaraj—the concept of village self-reliance—GSS works to improve the quality of life in some of the most remote and deprived regions across six Indian states: Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. The organization operates through a comprehensive approach built on three interlinked verticals: Human &amp; Institutional Development, Livelihood Enhancement, and Natural Resource Management. In the human development space, GSS focuses on child protection, education, community leadership, and strengthening local institutions such as Panchayats, SHGs, Farmer Producer Organizations, and youth clubs. Its livelihood initiatives promote sustainable agriculture, allied rural enterprises, and livestock development to create economic stability and reduce vulnerability. Through natural resource management, GSS leads efforts in watershed rehabilitation, soil and water conservation, and building climate resilience in ecologically fragile areas. Over 38 years of committed work have earned GSS deep trust among rural populations, as well as recognition and partnership from leading development organizations such as UNICEF, NABARD, ICICI Foundation, IIMPACT, and Solidaridad. By integrating social, economic, and environmental dimensions, GSS continues to build sustainable, self-reliant rural communities that are resilient, empowered, and future-ready.
