Children & Youth: Systemic Mental Health Challenges

  • 1 out of 4  Indian children aged 13 to 15 struggles with depression (भारत में, ४ में से १ बच्चा १३- १५ के आयु में डिप्रेशन से झूझता है)
  • In a recent study of Indian schools, 42% children reported they were teased, insulted, bullied or physically harassed (हाल ही में भारतीय स्कूलों के सर्वे ने बताया की ४२% बच्चों को छेड़ा गया, उनका अपमान किया गया, उन्हें तंग किया गया या शारीरिक रूप से प्रताड़ित किया गया)

Children & Youth: Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Mental Health

  • As per the The State of the World’s Children report released by UNICEF in October 2021, children and youth in India are expected to feel the effects of COVID-19 on their mental health for years to come (भारत में बच्चे और युवा कई वर्षों तक अपने मानसिक स्वास्थ्य पर कोविड -१९ के प्रभावों को महसूस करते रहेंगे)
  • Over 33% of 5-13 year-olds and 50% 14-18 year-olds reported poor or very poor mental health, during the pandemic and lockdown restrictions in India (भारत में महामारी और लॉकडाउन प्रतिबंधों के दौरान 33% 5-13 वर्ष और 50% 14-18 वर्ष के बच्चों ने खराब या बहुत खराब मानसिक स्वास्थ्य की सूचना दी

Social Emotional Learning is a process that helps students acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to understand themselves, manage stress and other challenging emotions, achieve their goals, build healthy relationships and support their families and communities.

Apni Shala implements two flagship Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programmes with government schools in Mumbai: School SEL Programme and Project Khoj.

School SEL Programme: A year-long Social Emotional Learning programme for students in grades 4-9 in the government schools of Mumbai

  • Weekly SEL sessions with students (online/ in-person)
  • Asynchronous Online Engagement through activities on WhatsApp groups
  • Check-in phone calls to students
  • Periodic awareness- and skills-based engagements with teachers and families of students

Project Khoj: A model educational initiative for SEL-integrated Schooling, implemented in partnership with a government school in Mumbai.

  • Apni Shala's role in this partnership is to deliver SEL-integrated education (entire teaching-learning operations) that brings together academic, physical and social emotional development of the students enrolled in Limbuni Baug Mumbai Public School.
  • Community Development initiatives through active participation of community members in School Management Committee, periodic caregiver engagements, and awareness and skill-building programs.
