Story

According to WHO report it is estimated that over 56 million people, including over 25 million in the last year of life, are in need of palliative care, whom 78% live in low- and middle-income countries. However, it is estimated that only about 12% of people needing palliative care receive this care.

In the context of India, home to one-sixth of the world’s population, has a huge burden of suffering from life-limiting diseases such as cancer. Less than 1% of India’s 121 crores population has access to pain relief and palliative care. It is a known fact that cancer is on the rise in our country and according to WHO, one in four cancer patients in the world are from India. And more than 70% of cancer patients are at an advanced stage at diagnosis itself and will die soon.

Once the cancer is termed as ‘terminal’, it means that the life of that patient will end soon irrespective of the treatment given. Hence, at this stage, it is deemed fit to concentrate on improving the quality of life and lessening the suffering rather than trying to prolong life with toxic treatments. This is the concept of ‘palliative care’.

The philosophy in Palliative Care is acceptance of the fact that death is nearing and no effort is made to either hasten or prolong it, but to improve the quality of the remaining life of the patient.

  1. The efforts of the palliative care team are to give
  2. Physical Care
  3. Psychological Care
  4. Spiritual Care
  5. Social Care
  6. Bereavement Support

With the above mentioned background, the members of Rotary Club of Banjara Hills Charitable Trust has built 82-bedded state-of-art hospice facility in Hyderabad. Sparsh Hospice, a project of RCBHCT, is charitable modern facility for "terminally ill patients”.

We extend palliative care through three services
